Democracy in Nepal is yet to be Saved from Fierce Ones - "Prachandas"

Prakash Bom
There had been many fierce ones in the past who enjoyed their power to keep Nepal backward. There are still many of them who are so willful to rule Nepal like Stalin. The one who has clearly declared to be the one is "Prachanda" the Maoists chairman, Pushpa Kamal Dahal. As a result, Nepal has been held back from its effort to institutionalize Democracy.

It took almost half a decade for people to find out the ambition of Prachanda. But, once he refused to drop his war-name "Prachanda", the fierce one, even after the peace accord under which the Maoists are committed to Democracy, the mainstream political parties became skeptical. Now people no longer trust the fierce one to lead the Maoist party.

For instant, what in the world Nepal can afford to provide military training to entire population of youth – eighteen or older! What will they do after military training? The intention is clear that the fierce-ones "Prachandas" in the Maoist party wanted to turn Nepal into the military state. Thanks to the political parties that opposed Maoist proposal to include the provision in the statute.

Maoists´ phantom of military intervention by India, as one of the fierce ones, PK Dahal branded, is nothing but a conspiracy that resulted from the dirty intra-party politics. In this 21st century, no nation can wage a military intervention overnight upon other nation prior to the counsel of international community, even it is necessary to invade due to the terrorist threats coming from such a nation. In addition, Nepal by all means can never provoke a war on India.

The current political challenge to the nation is predominant to drafting the new constitution for institutionalizing democracy. The democratic forces must challenge the regressive forces that come with the provisions to restrict the freedom such as state-controlled economic system.

The best policy is the economic independence that allows the state, corporations, private sectors and cooperatives strengthen economy. It was the most progressive accord of constitution panel to adopt an economic system in which the state, corporations, private sector and cooperatives will be allowed to develop independently and work in partnership with every investment policy.

How extreme are the fierce-ones "Prachandas" in the Maoist party is unfortunate to the nation. Due to this people are suffering with the intense insecurity. For example, what in the world Nepal should seek a withdrawal from the World Trade Organization or the International Monitory Fund?

As a matter of facts, the fierce-ones of the Maoist party should be brought to justice for human rights violations that they committed during people´s war and at the present by advocating extreme measures of military rule and guerrilla threats.

For example, fierce-ones in the Maoist party currently calling to turn colleges into barracks for Maoist guerrilla force, has become a mounting concern for international community. This is a serious threat to the new constitution and the peace process.

It has been clear that the fierce-ones "Prachandas" have adapted the measures of guerrilla war, in the name of nationalism, which can attract to them the support of the Royal-Prachandas, who had kept the nation backward for centuries and now are at present in dormant position.

It is clear now the nation has to unite under the democratic forces that include all socialists or communists, traditionalists (multi-ethnic, cultural and religious forces) to guard the peace process and statute drafting as means to institutionalize Democracy.

The Democracy in Nepal now clashes with the fierce-ones "Prachandas" whether be the Maoists or Stalinists or Royalists, for they are all the same – the fanatic. The nation must trust the democratic forces that may well be found within the Maoist party. There are many fierce-ones "Prachandas" in Nepal but the most threatening ones at this point in the current political crisis are as follow:

The most ambitious demagogue is the chairman of the Maoist party "Prachanda" the fierce-one Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who seems desperately clinging to the power as the chairman of the Maoist party as long as he can until he becomes the head of the state under the Maoist rule. That´s why Young Communist League (YCL) is under his control. He feeds them with all means to win their support through the network of nepotism and bribes. He has become the most untrustworthy corrupt politician who is willing to give or take anything for the power in the glory of the Maoist of Nepal.

The second fierce-one "Prachanda" is Mohan Baidhya, the most ambitious Maoist ideologue, who does not have faith in the rule of law under the democratic system but strongly advocates one party rule. Basically, he is one of the leaders who is incapable of handling the multiparty political system. In his ideology, he prefers to put everyone in one basket of the Maoist party. His dream is to see Nepal being ruled under one party system of the Maoist rule.

The question for the nation and the people is that whether these fierce-ones are nationalist or impossible demagogue and ideologue, whose ambition and ideology have become only the impediment for the entire nation. If people have observed the fact that in the next general election they will not elect these regressive "Prachandas."

It seems that Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has taken more liberal path in the Maoist party and discarded the role of fierce-one. As claimed that he is the one who had advocated 2006 peace accord in the Maoist party. Therefore, he supports peace and constitution drafting processes. It appears as if he is the only one high ranking leader in the Maoist party who has faith in the multiparty democracy under the federal republic order.

Yet people cannot trust the Maoists for Democracy until peace process and constitution drafting is complete for the multiparty democratic order in which one-party demagogy and ideology for the military style of rule dies away from the soil of the nation. It is one of the most primitive ways of thinking that humans have ever indulged for the power by restricting opportunity and happiness for rest of other who think another way.

Nepal is struggling for Democracy that protects pluralism as the rights of people to think, live and respect life differently. It is absolutely undemocratic to force everyone live in one enclave, controlled and manipulated by the madness of a demagogue under the bunch of ideologue, who are insolently fanatic. Democratic forces even by mistake should never trust in the leadership of Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Mohan Baidhaya, and their successors.
