Help the ACLU protect your human rights...or lose those rights.
Dear ACLU Supporter,
Call your U.S. senators right now. Tell them you strongly oppose stripping crucial civil liberties advances from the Defense Authorization bill.
We're on the verge of two historic breakthroughs in the Senate—the end of the military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and the securing of full reproductive rights for the women who bravely serve this country in the military.
But, we need you to help make it happen.
Right now, the Senate is debating the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes critical provisions that have the potential to significantly advance civil liberties in this country—the repeal of the military's indefensible "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and the repeal of a ban that prevents a servicewoman or a military wife or daughter from using her own private dollars to access abortion care on military bases overseas.
But, in the Senate's "lame duck" session, emboldened extremists are fighting to remove these key provisions from the bill and block progress on these critical civil liberties issues.
It's important that your U.S. senators hear from you right now. Tell them you strongly oppose stripping these crucial civil liberties advances from the Defense Authorization bill.
Make no mistake about it, victory on these important issues is within reach. But, we must act now. If these two provisions are stripped from the bill now, it is unlikely that they will come up for a vote during the next Congress—meaning that these discriminatory policies will continue for at least another two years.
The Senate could vote on this at any minute. Make your voice heard. Call your senators immediately.
Together, we will show the Senate that we refuse to stand by and watch them destroy our fundamental freedoms. At a time when service members are willing to put their lives at risk to preserve our rights and freedom, it is simply unacceptable that lesbian, gay and bisexual service members are forced to hide their very selves, and that servicewomen are denied access to safe, legal abortion care when they serve abroad.
Please act today.
Sincerely,
Anthony D. Romero
