Is Gardasil Safe?

On February 2, 2007, Texas became the first state to require all girls entering the sixth grade be inoculated with Merck’s new vaccine Gardasil. To prevent legislative debate, Republican Governor Rick Perry signed the executive order requiring the shots and the plan begins in September 2008. The vaccine is effective for five years, requires three shots over an eight-month span and costs $360.

According to an article in the NY Times, Robert Black, a spokesman for Governor Perry, down-played “rumors” that Mike Toomey, the high-powered Merck lobbyist and former chief of staff to Gov. Perry and his predecessor, may have swayed the Governor’s opinion. And Raymond F. Kerins Jr., a Merck spokesman, refused to discuss lobbying efforts in Texas and the nationwide campaign that is enlisting women in politics to push their program. (
