I have been juicing for almost 20 years. I know how I struggled at first. Don't lose heart. You just need a few handy juicing tips to enable you to be on the best of terms with your juice extractor machine.
1. Make sure you have the juice jug firmly in place before you put the first veggies in the juicer! It can be quite a spill if you discover too late that it hasn't been fitted according to the manual. I know! I have had to clean up a major mess on more than one occasion. You can make better use of the nutrients than your kitchen floor!
2. Take the veggies from the fridge right before you start. Cold produce gives cold juice, which tastes better.
3. If you can't find or can't afford organic veggies, don't worry about it. Just make sure that you peel waxed fruits or veggies such as cucumbers and apples.
4. Buy a firm scrub brush that you can keep exclusively for cleaning your veggies.
5. Try to aim for as wide a variety of colors as possible. The more colorful your juice, the higher your nutrient intake will be. This is one of the most important juicing tips.
6. The nutrition part of parenting can become much easier if you can get your kids to enjoy drinking juice. If they refuse to drink anything other than their smoothies at first, you can always slip some of the good stuff into those recipes to start off with. Once they get used to super healthy smoothies, you can slowly introduce them to veggie 'soda'. It can take a while to get used to the different tastes. Be patient.
7. While you may prefer adding more fruit when you start out, it is a good idea to concentrate on veggies later on. The fruits are too high in sugar. You also may have to limit the sweeter vegetables such as carrots and beetroot.
8. If you want to make a meal of your health drink, you can add some ground nuts and a sprinkle of shredded coconut.
9. Produce with a low water content doesn't do well in a juicer. Keep banana and pawpaw for smoothies, for instance. You can use the juicier stuff for your new health buddy.
10. Are you struggling to get anything from greens? The easiest way is to roll each leaf into a little ball. You can then juice these one or two at a time together with a carrot or an apple.
11. Is your machine clogging up? Try to go from softer veggies or fruits to harder ones and then back to the softer ones. This helps the machine to get rid of the fibers from the softer produce.
