Why Have The Fear Of Death?
Although, we all know that death is an obvious phenomena, it is somehow the most terrifying one. In fact, many believe that because it is an unbeatable obstacle of our lives, we tend to fear it the most. Most humans, throughout their lifespan fear mortality.
We, humans, are after all desperate social animals and tend to grow with the society. This very often builds in more responsibilities and competitiveness in a human life. An individual often fears death because he/she is a responsible civilian in many ways. Everyone works and plays their part in the social world by contributing to it and thereby, successfully fulfilling the needs and wants of their loved ones. The fear of how their loved ones will cope and survive in the society after them, is one prime reason that explains the fear of death. The other reason, the fear to die as a failure in life, comes from the self-bred competitivness of most humans. But, what they fail to realize is that to fear something that is unstoppable is futile.
However, a better explanation to not fear death comes from a great philosopher, 'Epicurus'. He suggested that the fear of death was an irrational fear and that we should not give in to such fear. He further explained that fear is an emotion which bears in every living soul, and because 'when we are, death is not and when death is, we are not', it is nothing but mere foolishness to fear death.
