"Head Start" the Healthy Way

Michael Byrd
Everyone wants their kids to have every advantage possible when they are growing up. We all want our children to do the best that they can in school, in sports and in their everyday lives. We often dedicate most of our own lives to preparing our children to effectively navigate theirs, and every parent you meet has a slightly different theory on what makes a child – and a parent – successful in this endeavor.

Regardless of widely divergent personal, political and child raising views, we can all agree that a healthy kid is a kid better able to approach life´s challenges and adventures with a bright outlook and a strong chance for success. One of the most important things that we can do, as parents, to help our children succeed is to make sure that they have a strong nutritional foundation. Of course, this means teaching them healthy eating habits, but it also involves basic nutrition, including watching their vitamin and nutrient intakes to make sure that they are getting all the things that they need for healthy bodies and minds.

One thing that even the most dedicated parents often forget about – or never knew in the first place – is omega 3 fish oil. Unfortunately, an omega 3 deficiency can actually impact the way that children learn, and some researchers have linked this deficiency to diagnoses of ADD and ADHD. Because omega 3s play an integral role in the way that we remember information and are able to recall it later, they also help older children study effectively in school.

While many health organizations simply recommend that children eat fatty fish once or twice a week to address their omega 3 needs, research indicates that they actually need a daily dose in order to keep their omega 3 at appropriate levels. Talk to your pediatrician about what types of omega 3 fatty acid supplements could be right for your child. They will likely recommend a salmon oil supplement, since these tend to be better for children than supplements made from other fish like mackerel.
