Vanity! What A Mess Indeed

Judy Ramsook
When we first enter this world, there is no team of plastic surgeons trying to adjust our noses, alter our faces and or cheekbones to give us that extra something that makes us look more attractive.

We, in fact come here with the things that make each and every one of us unique. It could be a face without a dimple, a nose that is not as straight as we would like it to be and a host of other things we notice every time we stand in front of the mirror. Vanity it seems takes care of the rest.

For as we grow older and wiser, we begin noticing the things others like about our friends or relatives for that matter. Things like a beautiful smile, that an even set of teeth will enhance. Those who think their teeth are in need of that kind of enhancement rush off to the nearest Orthdontist so he/she can fix their teeth for a fee.

Others who want a better looking nose have that adjusted. Women who want a larger chest get that altered too, the list can go on and on. And as one ponders this list, is it becoming more and more evident that most people do not accept others for who they really are? All in the name of yes, that one deadly sin, Vanity.

Or are some persons embarrassed to be seen by his/her peers on the arm of someone who does not fit the beautiful stereotype? Okay, so if some people want to improve the way they look, via plastic surgery or whatever method they choose to use, that’s fine.

But beautiful no longer seems to be a quality. Nowadays with so many people turning to surgical enhancements, and beauty products galore, it seems to be more of an industry.

And all one has to do is take a walk down the cosmetics aisle of any store for further evidence of this. There used to be a time when some men did not feel the need to enhance their skin for anyone. But if one takes a closer look, there are moisturizers for them as well.

Maybe some people will never know the true meaning of beauty, but the next time someone says he/she accepts another for who he/she really is, should the beauty police be called in for confirmation of this? And I did not mean to go Sir Paul McCartney/The Beatles on anyone, but will they still love you when you are sixty –four and surgical enhancements and no amount of beauty products can come to the rescue?
