John L. Waters talks about His Independent Research on Integration and Self-Healing
I consciously use physical movement as a cognitive aid. For example, riding on the bus helps me read, write, and think. Moving my body and feeling my body being moved helps me get ideas. I'm not an MD or a PhD, and my research is not conventional. Because of this as well as my personal limitations, I need to work with a credible research collaborator as both a subject and as a consultant. In fact this has been recommended by Dr. James Knight and Dr. Kathleen Preston, two retired Humboldt State University psychology professors who worked with me on short informal research projects before they retired several years ago and moved to a different state. Even when I was a boy in school I was handicapped in vision, in social interaction, in memory, and in thinking. Years later I did a lot of independent study to understand my disability. My disability was compensated for by a special ability. For example, I felt the need to follow my strong intuition rather than ignore it or deny it.
It's easy for a person to assume that everyone is talented in the same way. For example, many children see well and perform well with their eyes in social interaction. If a boy doesn't see depth and can't interact well socially or in ball games, during moments of intense interaction impatient and intolerant boys will attack the handicapped boy verbally or even physically. Later people will devalue the handicapped boy because of his deficits. Compensating may require the stimulation and development of extra intelligence in the young man.
Our culture emphasizes eye work in reading, in social interaction, in fast team sports, and in driving a car or riding a bicycle in busy traffic. Indeed, lack of binocular vision and depth perception makes living in our culture very stressful every day. Such stress can make learning difficult. The extra intelligence comes to the rescue! People won't understand all this, however, until someone integrates the extra intelligence with precision speech. This integration doesn't require depth perception and good social skills. Despite this, however, non-handicapped persons may ignore a talent that isn't vision and social interaction. The reason is because people trust a person who is like them or better than them in the ways they’ve been taught to respect. For example, boys respect a professional ball player and college students respect a full professor. It's much harder for people to respect an oddly handicapped person who is different.
My school teachers never taught me about intuition, but they taught me about calculation and logic. Despite all the academic and popular focus on reasoning and memory, I grew up very intuitive about living plants and animals but not about people, and even though I have a visual and mental handicap, I scored about 130 on IQ tests. Using my special training and my special talent, over decades I worked out a testable understanding of the intuitive faculty.
All my articles have come by intuition, as do a lot of other people's voluminous writings. My research is on intuition and the integration of intuition with reason and calculation. Intuition is an intelligence that scholars fail to define. Dictionaries define words, and reasoning is well defined by scholars. Intuition is still not clearly defined. Other philosophers have skirted this issue.
Prophets have spoken or written by intuition, and called it "divine" without understanding intuition. Modern science is determining which brain centers are active when the divine "God" is being felt. Conscious memory and reason aren't dominant. The intuitive, spontaneous non-retentive non-rational process is dominant. "God" is expressing the other intelligence through the so-called oracle, prophet, or "channel." Since this process isn't understood and mastered, error and "noise" garble the message. The "wheat" doesn't get separated from the "chaff." It's like weather folklore- some old ways and sayings will bear up under scientific scrutiny.
The current need is to integrate this "God" brain activity with reason so that more persons can better access and use more of their own creative intelligence. At present schools don't teach this integration. My work is to help people start the new school prototype.
I need to say up front that I grew up with brain damage that was investigated when I was in first grade in 1946, in third grade in 1948, and in ninth grade in 1954 but medical knowledge in those times was limited and my family didn't take me to a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Today if I were a child my childhood condition would be diagnosed as pervasive developmental disorder or autism.
My independent research (1963-2005) is on stimulating, nourishing, and integrating the brain, at least what's left of it. You can understand that a person with brain damage, autism, or PDD has difficulty surviving outside a sheltered workshop. I needed to study intuition and get more intuition to survive.
There's no longer a debate on whether God exists or not! Science has FOUND God! Furthermore, my many thousands of created works, my letters of recommendation, and my other accomplishments demonstrate what God has done for me! I think that many other people can and will benefit by using the same integration model and method that I present.
My eyes aren't as sensitive and retentive as my hands. I don't visualize anything before I begin to work. The "divine" process takes over and because of my disability I do not usually see a “divine” vision but instead I use spontaneous body movement to figure and get new ideas in art, in music, in writing, or in making something else. For example I used to create twenty new melodies each hour as I played on the organ and sang freely. I also freely painted and wrote poems, some forty pieces in an hour. Looking through my many works one sees evidence that this process really works! I also have helped persons by this method and I know how to help more persons using the same method.
In helping a person I work with them alone. My extra intelligence (parts of the brain being used in extraordinary ways already verified by science) integrates with the intelligence of my client and we both work together. The better we integrate, the better this process works. Because of my PDD or autism, however, my social skills are not great and so I've not been a charismatic teacher.
Because of my personal limitations I need to work with a research collaborator as both a subject and as a consultant. In fact this has been recommended by Dr. James Knight and Dr. Kathleen Preston, two retired Humboldt State University psychology professors who worked with me on short informal research projects before they retired several years ago and moved to a different state.
