He's sorry he bet on baseball. At least that's what he wrote on those now-infamous balls. Now, a flip comment made during an appearance on a late night talk show some years back has spurred a new inscription.

Rose is still making appearances in Las Vegas, signing his "confession" baseballs for anyone willing to fork over the proper amount.

During a chat with Universal Rarities Auctions at a signing session earlier this month, Rose joked about an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman" several years ago. While discussing the topic of his alleged gambling on baseball, Rose remembered telling Letterman's audience that such allegations were ridiculous and that "the next thing they would be saying is that he shot J.F.K." The comment drew guffaws from the audience, but as we all know now, it turned out Rose did bet on baseball as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

The "I'm sorry I bet" balls released through the estate of long-time collector Barry Halper this fall triggered another media firestorm but Rose --always amused at the hubbub he creates -- has taken the "apology" inscription and run with it.

He agreed to sign two balls for Universal "apologizing" for the assassination of Kennedy and the auction company placed one of them on eBay. It drew 29 bids and sold Friday night for $611.

"It seemed like a novel idea but we only had him do a couple because we're not certain if it will have the same appeal as the original inscription," Universal's Director of Operations Jeff Woolf told SportsCollectorsDaily.com.
