“It is what it is they are. They ARE piss ants. You call things what they are.”

Mark Lowry
We are embroiled in debates over freedom of speech in America. Many people think there should be no restrictions on what is said. Others think there should be limits placed on designated “hate speech” without really defining how to distinguish that type of speech from others.

And yet others want to control everything we say or even think. Our educational system has turned into a clearing house for propaganda instead of a bastion for creative ideas and a true educational experience without bias toward the new one world order and ultimate global village filled with compliant village idiots.

I remember as a child being punished for saying what was considered bad words, mostly profanity or some form of slang. It was considered a terrible thing to utter some words, words I really didn’t understand the meaning of.

My grandmother on my mother’s side of the family clarified some of this confusion for me one day when she saw a colony of ants in her front yard. Upon seeing them she got up out of her rocking chair on the front porch and without hesitation headed to the kitchen where the old steal coal fired kitchen stove was still warm from morning breakfast. She got the kettle of hot boiling water with her apron wrapped around its hot handle and took the steaming water out to where the ants were. She stood there and poured the hot water on them and unceremoniously scalded them to death.

As she did it she muttered: “There you piss ants!” I jumped back in horror with what she said and started telling her how that “p” word was a bad word. Granny pshawed me off and said “ain’t neither, it is what it is they are. They are piss ants. You call things what they are.” That profound declaration took me years to wrap my mind around.

In today’s world of political correctness it is more difficult than ever to know what is and is not appropriate language. New rules of decorum in the never ending harangue of “you owe me an apology,” crowd, never provide an opportunity to really relax in a conversational setting. “If you are afraid to speak out, you are not in America any more” - ‘unknown’

No one knows when or what word or statement someone will use to reproach them; demand an apology and require you to say something they think more appropriate. I actually bought into that for a little while because I have always wanted to be fair and not harm others. However, more lately I have just about had enough of this.

We have lost our stinking minds as best as I can figure. When did anyone come up with this morass of crazy rules redefined as time progresses? How in the world can anyone ever tell what the other person is thinking if they have to be so guarded in what they say? It is impossible to communicate when someone is continually interrupting and censuring your speech or you are waiting for the next angry explosion of "what did you say?"

Clarence Darrow, the famed ACLU attorney who took on William Jennings Bryan in the Dayton Tennessee Scopes Monkey trial was questioned by journalists regarding his use of profanity. He was a well educated articulate individual with an expansive vocabulary and the journalists couldn’t understand why he would stoop to the use of vulgarity.

Darrow’s reported response was that he used it for clarity of communication. When he used profanity, no one confused his intent or communication. It seemed he was saying it was for people who didn’t have ability to understand a more expanded vocabulary were better able to understand profanity.

That bit of simplicity in communication muddled with Granny’s wisdom has tended to guide me in my later and more independent hard headed years of life. I have come to the conclusion the main factor behind political correctness demands for specific approved speech is not based on equality, tolerance, hurt feelings or pride, it is totally based on control. Objective of the “you owe me an apology crowed” appears to be enforcing another’s will on those they disagree with.

I think I finally figured this out. They are hell bent on controlling my freedom of speech and dictating to me what I can and can not do. Well, you owe me an apology now. It looks like Granny and Clarence Darrow were right. “It is what they are! They are piss ants! You call things what they are!”

It ain’t fancy, but it works for me. As for you, I really don’t give a damn Scarlet, go sulk somewhere else. We are through; your controlling days are done. Your rights just ended when they started stompin' on mine.

If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”- George Washington
