JR: What made you decide to start a radio show?
MT: I got involved in this sport in a very unusual way. I always wanted to be part of it, but circumstances stopped me. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to be in, so I took it. I became part owner of a wrestling school with a very good Indy Guy. Being on the other side I saw the plight of the Indy Guy. I felt that from being in the Music Industry for 20+ years, that if I learned anything from it, it was that you had to be a promotion machine. My goal was to help the young guys move to the next level. All the other shows out there were WWE based. I wanted to help tomorrow star by pushing them.
JR: How have you been able to keep TTRS at the level its at for so long?
MT: I appreciate your nice compliment. I think our strength is that we try to NOT be like everyone else. We decided a long time ago to concentrate on the Indy's and the Legends. We use the Legends to bring in an audience and then we expose the audience to the young guys. We try to show there is an alternative to the WWE. I am not Anti-WWE, I am Pro- Alternative. Some other things that set us aside is that I have been a fan for 30+ years. I have been a fan longer than many of the other hosts have been alive. I have a vast knowledge of the HISTORY of wrestling. I remember one of the few times I listened to someone else’s show. The guest brought up that one of his influences was Ricky Morton. The Host says "Ricky Martin? I didn't know he wrestled" and he was serious. If you don't know who Ricky Morton is, you shouldn't be in the business. Something else that sets us apart is that I am IN the business. I work almost Every Weekend as a manager for many promotions out there. I work, sometimes 3-5 matches a weekend as a manager. I am on the inside and really try to make a difference. Maybe the biggest thing that sets us up is our unique relationships with many of the Promoters and the Wrestlers themselves. They know we are not trying to be the "60 Minutes" of Wrestling. We are more like the "David Letterman" or the "Entertainment Tonight". I am not looking to get the big scoop that will humiliate others, I am looking for a Positive Portrayal of the sport I love. The Wrestlers feel safe on my show. They enjoy the show because my object is to show the other side. I want to hear the stuff you don't know about outside of the ring. I want to know what it was like back then. I want to know what makes them tick.
JR: Not only are you a huge fan of wrestling, but you manage as well. Talk about the Trash Clan?
MT: The Trash Clan is a unique group of people that I have managed throughout the Indy Scene. Some of these guys are the cream of the crop and some will be. John Rambo of NWL/HOPWF has given me the opportunity to work with many young students as well. We learn from each other. These guys are tomorrow’s stars. I have Managed Some guys who have recently been on Smackdown too. Some members of the Trash Clan include Rockin' Rebel, Kage, Jason Static, Cabbie, CJ O'Doyle, Monsta Mac, Savannah Jack, Izzy Stoned, Red Hot Russ, ASian Sinsation, Josh Lovejoy, Nixon, and many more. I have even had the honor of Managing Super Destroyer AJ Petrucci and Jimmy Valiant.
JR: If you could manage one person who would it be an why?
MT: This is a tough one, Female wise I would love to manage Cindy Rogers. She is one of the most Talented women out there. As far as men, I would have loved to manage the Valiant Brothers in their Prime, but on the current day, maybe rick Flair. Think of all you could learn from being on the road with him. If not him, Steve Corino..
JR: Who has been your favorite interview BESIDES Jimmy Valiant?
MT: Wow. You realize in the part 2 years we have interviewed probably 400 or more people? It would be impossible to narrow it down to one, but I will tell you Some of my top ones and tell you why:
1) Hulk Hogan - This one is obvious. He doesn't do Internet Radio. He did my show last August and if all goes well next Tuesday (8/23)
2) Bobby Heenan - a great guy with so much to give. One of my favorite guys in the biz
3) Jimmy Hart - A true fun guy to talk to. a story on everyone
4) Ken Timbs - I had his last interview before he passed on. He was an unsung hero and one of the first Legends to come on my show. He had so many great stories. I miss him!
5) Nick Bockwinkle - This guy was top of the game for so long. A class act
6) Steve Corino - I have watched this guy grow in the biz to the International Star he is today
7) Ole Anderson - I am the only one who had a fun interview with him
8) Dusty Rhodes - Another Childhood hero of mine
9) Terry Funk - Someone who has become a True Living Legend
10 Rob Feinstein - controversy is his middle name
JR: If there was one thing you could change about the Pro Wrestling Industry, what would it be and why?
MT: If I could change one thing it would be to bring back a stronger territory or competition to WWE. With there being only one major Promotion in this country, it doesn't allow the young people out there an opportunity to go big time unless you are extremely well connected or lucky. Some of the best wrestlers out there today are weekend warriors. With only one major promotion, you can not inspire the WWE Writers to put on wrestling. Instead we get this Diva Garbage. Yo might get 20 minutes of wrestling on a 2 hours show.
JR: Best promo that someone has done for your show?
MT: Prime Time Elix Skipper, Jimmy Valiant, Hulk Hogan, Jimmy Hart
Word Association
Steve Corino - One of the best guys out there today. Hardest working and friend of the show
Bret Hart - A legend who worked very hard to prove himself. Sad how his career ended. Too bad it couldn't have been on his own terms. One of the most famous legacies as far as his family and yet tragic in the end of Owen.
Jake The Snake Roberts - Demons. Not a gimmick. One of the most Brilliant minds in the business
Bobby Heenan - One of the people who appreciates this business and everything that it afforded him. A guy who has really seen this business develop and the last of the REAL managers. A lost art.
New Jack - A man of his word and probably one of the toughest guys I have ever met. He said to me that I am his last White friend. He has been a very good friend to me!
JR: You seem to have some kind of blatant disregard for ROH?s Embassy led by (Prince Nana). Why this blatant disregard and lack of respect?
MT: Prince Nana is a very well to do guy. I have worked my whole life for everything. Please understand that the Embassy has some of the best guys out there on their payroll. I respect each and everyone of them. Nana, I respect the fact that he has gotten to where he is, BUT, Not everyone can be bought. He claims he will buy TTRS, but this show is a labor of love and not for sale to Nana. He doesn't like when you say no to him. Lastly, we are in America. I see how he treats others. I see how he feels superior to others. I am here to tell you that he will get his down the road.
MT: Closing Comments:
This is a labor of Love. I fund this show out of my pocket. I have made some great contacts in this business and have been able to live some of my dreams by being fortunate enough and privleidged enough to be a part of the business in and out fo the ring. There are many people out there who love the show and some who dislike the show. I will keep doing the show as long as I am having fun and helping others achieve their dreams. If I was younger I would be more than a manager. This show has given me the chance to talk to my childhood heroes and to take their stories and archive them for others. Our name has become the defacto in the business to many. The internet allows us to be international. I see hits from all over the world. We pride ourselves on being original and fun. If you don't like us, don't listen. The original reason for the show besides the stuff we talked about is it is an escape from reality. When I say it is Tuesday, it is the best night of the week, I mean it. The past 3 years of my life out side of the show has been a nightmare. There has been some very big tragedies that have destroyed my personal life as well as my financial life. This is my savior. This is my escape. I thank My Assistants Trish & Nigel. They have been a major part of the shows success. Our loyal fans who come back week after week have been our driving force. From Skotti who posts my shows and Neech who helps keep my calendar updated, to Jen who maintains my message board and plays cop in the chat room. I love them all and appreciate their devotion to this show. I want to thank everyone who recognizes what we are trying to achieve.
You may love the show, you may hate it, but you know what? It isn't for everyone. Is is for the superfan and is is for the fan of the way it was. It is also for the new fan looking for an alternative. If you aren't too careful, you might actually meet a star of tomorrow, today!!
