Ref: Petition submitted for Permanent Peace in Nepal.

Your Excellency,

The Nepalis in America and around the world would first like to congratulate you on your taking up the leadership of the United Nations. The Kingdom of Nepal is a long time member nation of the world body since the early fifties. Nepal’s special relationship with the UN is a shining example of Nepal’s foreign policy in maintining goodwill amongst all member nations of the world. In its long glorious history, Nepalis have served the UN with gallantry, heroism and with humanity. Today, thousands of Nepalis serve under the UN’s Peace Keeping Forces around the world. From the Americas to Africa, Europe to Asia, Nepali soldiers and personnel have helped maintain peace, assist in helping mankind.

We Nepalis are saddened that our own nation is at the crossroads of history, having undergone more than a decade of internal crisis, war, violence and terror. More than thirteen thousand Nepalis men, women and children lost their lives due to the war declared by militants against an independent, sovereign nation. Today, due to the intervention of the international community, the United Nations is getting directly involved in maintaining peace. The agreement of the Seven Party Alliance and the Maoist’s have opened the path for the UN’s mediation, monitoring and supervision of the present ceasefire between the government forces and the Maoist’s.

The Security Council meet’s today to decide on the UN’s peace keeping mission to our country. Your Personal Representative Mr. Ian Martin has already visited Nepal and started the process of arm’s management, monitoring process of the camps and the containers. We all wish him success in his mission.

Yet, the truth remains that Nepalis are deeply concerned and step forward wearily towards this environment of peace and security. They are equally concerned that their nation is coming under various internal and external threats being carried out by foreign governments, as well as their own misguided, corrupt political parties. Least of all, the Maoists simply cannot be trusted, as their past record has proven them to be unreliable partners, always carrying out their hidden agendas, or carrying out the interests of foreign masters and governments.

On the day of your swearing ceremony on December 14th last month, you made a promise to all of mankind that, “I will do everything in my power to ensure that the UN would live up to the hopes that many people around the world, place on the institution.” Similarly, the Nepali people place their hopes that under your august leadership, Nepal will be one of your main focus, in bringing about permanent peace, security, democracy

and development. You have this historical responsibility and we all pray that our gods and goddesses bless you in carrying out your mandate.

We request that the Security Council members, in their meeting decide and approve this peace process as per the wishes of the Nepali people and not the political forces. We do not want our country to be divided on ethnic lines, division based on religion, our national unity and nationhood threatened. We wish that the Kingdom of Nepal remain a Hindu nation with a Constitutional Monarchy and a Multi Party democracy, where everyone can enjoy their freedoms, exercise their rights and live in a nation without fear, where rule of laws prevail, and the people remain sovereign.

Please accept our petition and do not disappoint the people of Nepal.

Thanking you,

Sincerely,

Signed by the Nepali people
