Some Recurring Video Game Characters

Judy Ramsook
People like things they can relate to. If someone is reading a book, or watching a movie or television show, he/she gets more involved with the protagonist especially if said character has a flaw or quality the reader/viewer can relate to or identify with.

The same can be said of video gamers. That’s why games like The Super Mario Bros. and the Legend Of Zelda series are so popular. They contain characters some of us became familiar with when the video game industry was still quite young. Characters that might make one wonder how did our quest for video gaming entertainment survive without such memorable characters?

From the first Mario Bros. game to the more up to date ones, no video gamer’s library would be without some of these games and that all too familiar plumber.

Similarly, Samus Aran of the Metroid series has had many adventures. The thing is, the adventures Samus Aran has take place on a fictional planet far away known as Zebes. While the Mario Bros. games are more earthbound related. Another series of games contain a family of heroes, all whose first name is the all familiar, Link.

To a video gamer, all one has to do is mention that name and right away one will gather the impression that one is indeed a fan of the legend Of Zelda series.

Furthermore, a video gamer can quickly get the impression that Link is from a family of heroes, especially if he/she has played the SNES/GBA A Link To The Past. In this particular game, we are briefly introduced to Link’s uncle, who, obviously was also a hero, as he passes on this quest to the young Link.

Since there are so many Zelda and Metroid games out now, Link’s and Samus’ adventures must take place in a matter of days or weeks. Another recurring character I find fascinating is Cid from the Final Fantasy series.

The builder of airships. No Final Fantasy game would be complete without this particular engineer and his flying machines. For as the Final Fantasy games progress, we soon realise that it is difficult to get from one place to the next by just hoofing it.

Although these games contain the same kind of weapons/strategy, they are still as addictive and enjoyable as the first one, recurring video game character ir not.

And after playing many video games I still don’t have a favourite character. For they are all unique in their own way. For instance, Samus Aran from the Metroid series, has her speed booster, morph ball, missiles, charge beam, wave beam, ice beam, long beam, bombs, energy tanks and so on while Link has his own little arsenal of boomerang, bow and arrow, hookshot, etc and most of all his trusty and powerful sword.

Video games and their brand of characters will come and go, but its those recurring video game heroes that keep some of us coming back for more adventure, action and addictive gameplay. Characters and heroes like Link, Mario, Samus Aran or even Cid.
