Repairing corrupted PST file after abruptly exiting Outlook 2003

In Outlook applications, you can add and use certain add-ins. These add-in provide some functionality of their own to provide some value-add of their own to the user. However, sometimes these add-ins do not get along with Outlook making it crash abruptly. Because of the crash, the PST (Personal Storage Table) file, which contains all the Outlook-related data, may get corrupt. In such scenarios, you would be unable to access Outlook and use your emails. To overcome such problem, you should repair Outlook PST using in-place methods. However, if you are unable to do so then you should use a third-party PST file repair tool.

Consider a scenario wherein you have Outlook 2003 in your system. When you open

"Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

To see what data this error report contains, click here."

When you click the Details button to check the details of the error, the following error signature is displayed:

"App Name App Version Module Name Module Version Offset

Outlook.exe 10.0.xxxx.x Hawkex.dll version 0000ebbc"

Cause:

The root cause of this error is that the McAfee Hawkes add-in by Network Associates is installed on your computer. There may also be chances that due to abruptly exiting Outlook regularly, the PST file may have gone corrupt.

Resolution:

To resolve this problematic situation, you should contact Network Associates to know how you should resolve this error. For the time being, you should uninstall the add-in. To do this, you should perform the following steps:

Open the Run dialog by following Start | Run.

Enter outlook.exe/safe and press the Enter key.

Click the Options option in the Tools menu.

Click the Advanced Options option in the Other tab.

Click Add-in Manager in the Advanced Options dialog box.

Clear the selected McAfee Hawkex add-in, and then click OK.

Exit and restart Outlook 2003. These steps should resolve the problem and you would be able to access and use Outlook properly.

However, if Outlook is still exiting abruptly that means that the PST file has corrupted. In this situation, you should use the Inbox Repair (Scanpst.exe) tool to scan and repair PST file. This tool rebuilds the index header of the PST file. However, sometimes even this tool is not able to repair the PST file. In such cases, you should use a PST repair software to perform PST recovery. Such read-only tools are able to repair PST files from all instances of corruption using fast yet sophisticated scanning algorithms.
