Sustainability Predicted As Most Prevalent Trend For 2007

Mike Catherall
Advertising giant JWT has listed off the top twenty predicted trends of 2007. Amongst them are no less than five references to sustainability and public health.

Included on the things to watch for are sustainable buildings and construction, hydrogen fuel technology, veggie-busses, or busses running off bio-diesel fuel, the elimination of trans-fats, agri-terrorism (or fear of), and hybrid dogs.

Veggie busses are a fantastic idea. They simply take a diesel engine (which was pretty much designed to run off peanut oil to begin with), heat up some sticky vegetable oil, and run it like a regular engine. What makes it such a great idea is its simplicity: No reliance on petroleum-based products, thus no environmental damage, its less expensive, better lubricated, burns more cleanly and produces no waste of its own.

Sustainability has been a rising phenomenon for the last ten years and it’s big business. Trend-hunters like JWT are ahead of the pack when it comes to honing in on entrepreneurial ventures that not only draw public attention due to sustainable business practice, but also benefit from government grants and relief.

Again, it boils down to an awareness issue. Many articles on environmental impact are written for a select, academic few and not always wholly accessible to a mainstream preoccupied with their own interests. Advertising is a medium that has mastered the art of making issues relevant to one’s immediate world, and it is my belief that it shall be the medium to raise public consciousness about social, political and ethical implications of our interactions, through consumption and otherwise, with the world around us.
