Oxfam encouraging hunger banquets across America

William Lambers
Selena Narayanasamy, a WFP Blogger Against Hunger, writes this week about taking action to feed the world's hungry. She says a great place to start is hosting or joining a Hunger Banquet.

The charity Oxfam America is encouraging these hunger banquets across the country. They show you how to set up the event at their web site. You can even sign up while watching their Hunger Banquet video. The event is unique in that you learn about the global hunger impacting nearly 1 billion people, and experience how the world's food is unevenly distributed. Some guests at the banquet receive a full course meal, others receive a smaller meal, and others receive an even smaller portion and have to sit on the floor.

You can share this great learning experience by writing to your legislators about global hunger. This is so critical because there cannot be a solution to global hunger unless world leaders are fully engaged. In America, the public can determine what priorities the leadership should tackle. If enough people attend a hunger banquet and write to their legislators afterwards, it could make a huge difference.

You can write to your representatives in Congress at www.house.gov or www.senate.gov. Or you can use the Oxfam take action page.

As few as 8-12 people writing to a legislator can be enough to get them to sign on to an important bill, or pay more attention to an issue. If enough citizens hold their elected leaders accountable for global food security, it would be a tremendous development toward defeating man's ancient enemy--hunger.
