Cost Savings In The Age of E-Commerce

Dennis Michael Gannon
Since the emergence of the internet and the development of the e-commerce evolution in the early 1980´s people and businesses have been looking for the perfect scenario to sell products online. Here we are 30 +/- years later and there is still no "Perfect" answer. Today´s businesses no matter how diverse are continually changing, modifying and improving the vast number of business models that flood the super highway. In the economy that we now live in people are always looking for the right bargain or an all in one answer to their needs. This in fact also pertains to the businesses that continue to fight to remain competitive.

When entering the e-commerce market as a vendor and trying to create a viable business online line there are several pieces to the puzzle to be solved in order to start selling your product or services online. Today´s e-commerce is far from the days of Michael John Aldrich and the television modifications to sell online. Now-a-days the components for the online shop are the sophisticated e-shop software, shopping cart programs and e-commerce platforms.

First to start you will need an e-shop, something that is flexible and easy to work with. There are numerous open source programs available so there is no need for an excessive outlay of money. The open source programs allow for custom modifications and many e-commerce service providers offer modules to integrate various features such as shopping carts and their own services to them. This route drastically reduces some of the research later for cart programs and e-commerce providers.

Next choosing the right shopping cart to work with your specific e-shop or even your business model can also prove to be a formidable job; there are literally hundreds to choose from. The major service providers generally provide integration modules (as mentioned earlier) for the shopping carts most often used. At this point, you would want to use a shopping cart that is popular and kept up-to-date. These shopping carts, as the e-shop, can also be found as an open source therefore further reducing the initial outlay of money. The majority of the online service providers will be more than able to work with the open source components due to the cost savings.

Once these components have been combined comes the integration with the service provider. Keep in mind that there is no one platform fits all so the e-commerce provider should be able to provide a flexible solution for your needs. This platform should include complete features to cover payment methods and options, promotional tools, security and guarantees for protection, and the personalized customer service that will prove to be extremely beneficial. These services will be the core of your online business and provide valuable tools for your success. These services are generally customizable to fit the platform to your business rather than trying to fit your business to the service platform.

When the e-commerce platform provider has been selected, make sure you obtain all applicable information prior to signing an agreement. Verify all possible fees, charges, promotions and services that they provide. Usually the cost savings that is available can be found with diligent research and not always with the most obvious names. The research that you conduct will prove to be the biggest savings of all.
