Why see a chiropractor?

There are several different reasons to see a chiropractor. Mid back pain is one of the most common areas of chief complaint that patients present to the office with. The mid back is typically called the thoracic spine and is made up of twelve vertebral segments that are associated with twelve pairs of ribs. Because of the orientation of the ribs and the thoracic spine there are many symptoms that can occur. The symptoms may range from the very benign to life threatening. They can occur from muscle tightness, spasm or trigger points which can cause localized and referred pain, to restricted motion when bending, twisting or turning that may cause very sharp intense pain that may radiate into the front of the chest. The restriction in thoracic motion oftentimes affects the rib cage and how it functions which can mimic respiratory or cardiac problems which may present as difficulty taking a deep breath and changes in heart rhythms. See your chiropractor immediately if any of the above symptoms occur so that the proper cause can be detected and a plan of care created for your specific needs.

How do you develop mid back problems?

Typical everyday activities can bring on this problem. Do we all bend twist, lift, reach and grab in a smooth biomechanically correct way? Of course not, we typically compromise our mid back without even thinking about it until it is too late. Sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk, in a car or airplane can contribute to mid back pain. Working at a computer at an ergonomically incorrect work station for prolonged periods of time can bring on thoracic spine pain. Reaching for something or holding something away from your body can bring on severe stabbing pain that can be localized or even radiate into the front of your chest. The mid back may even develop pain as a result of problems in either the neck or lower back due to the compensatory nature of the spine.

What is the cure?

Chiropractors are experts in the care of the neuromusculoskeletal system which makes up the majority of your body. Finding those areas of restrictions along the thoracic spine and then restoring normal joint function helps take the pressure off irritated nerves that exit in pairs along the spinal column. These nerves control the tissue tone in that region which are typically in spasm when mid back pain is present. This extreme tightness and spasm causes the decreased range of motion and sharp pain that is usually associated with a subluxation in the thoracic spine. Chiropractic adjustments are done by hand or an adjusting instrument to the restricted areas of the spine. Physical therapy modalities may be utilized by your chiropractor to help speed up the healing process.
