Viva Che Guevara; Shame On Target Corp!
Target Corp said on Friday it had pulled a CD carrying case bearing Ernesto "Che" Guevara's image after an outcry by critics who label the Marxist revolutionary a murderer and totalitarian symbol.
Target had touted a music disc carrying case for Che admirers emblazoned with the Argentine-born guerrilla's iconic 1960 portrait by Alberto Diaz, or "Korda."
Target's kneejerk reaction is regretable; Che Guevara is a symbol of youthful rebellion that transcends political ideologies. I have seen people of all ages and from all walks of life with T-Shirts emblazoned with Che's likeness.
There may also be an element of racism in the protests; some folks can't abide the reality that an Hispanic icon is so universally revered and respected.
The moral indignation ring hollow; communism is a discredited and defeated political ideology. Does anyone really think that Target was advocating communism?
Those purportedly outraged by Che's image on products sold in Target stores, should appreciate the irony of a socialist revolutionary's likeness stamped on the technological gadgets that define our capitalist society.
I wish I still had my Che T-Shirt that I sported back in the 70's; I would wear it to Target as a protest.
Viva Che Guevara!
Shame on Target!
