Rep. Cardoza Demands Prisoner Loren Herzog Not Be Returned To Central Valley Or San Joaquin County

Congressional Desk
Congressman Cardoza joined residents and officials in San Joaquin County in expressing significant concern that prisoner Loren Herzog could be returned to the community.

Herzog is on the verge of early parole after serving 12 years in prison. He was initially sentenced to 78 years in prison on three counts of first degree murder. Following an appeal, he was sentenced to 14 years with a plea of guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Prison officials are eying a return to San Joaquin County upon his the early release.

In a one-page letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Congressman Cardoza strongly encouraged prison officials to look outside the community for a place to relocate Herzog – if not completely repeal his parole.

"The pain and suffering he caused can never be undone, and the least we can do as government officials is make sure that this man pays in full for the crimes he has committed," said Congressman Cardoza in the letter. "It is unconscionable that this man could be sent to the Central Valley community he has already brutally betrayed and victimized."

The full text of the letter is as follows:

Dear Gov. Schwarzenegger:

I would like to express how extremely disturbed I was to learn that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is considering allowing Loren Herzog to reside in San Joaquin County when he is released on parole. This man is a danger to the residents of San Joaquin County. I strenuously object to any plan that would let this man further traumatize our Central Valley community, and furthermore, I strongly recommend that you repeal Loren Herzog´s parole.

As you know, Loren Herzog was initially sentenced to serve 78 years to life in prison on three counts of first degree murder. When the decision was appealed, Herzog was sentenced to only 14 years after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of Cyndi Vanderheiden, and is an accessory in at least three other murders. Despite this gruesome history, Herzog has not served his sentence in full. I strongly believe that giving this man an early parole is an injustice to his victims´ families. The pain and suffering he caused can never be undone, and the least we can do as government officials is make sure that this man pays in full for the crimes he has committed.

I understand that CDCR had previously planned to parole Herzog in Modoc or Tehama Counties before San Joaquin County was considered. It is unconscionable that this man could be sent to the Central Valley community he has already brutally betrayed and victimized. The only thing Loren Herzog deserves is to stay in prison.

Sincerely,

Dennis Cardoza
