Small People. Blue World

Jason A Forthofer
Every Saturday morning, mothers would wake their children for breakfast and a little morning television. The kids grab their 'blankeys' and their teddy bears and curl up in front of the TV "Mom, the Smurfs are on!" one child yells with excitement. Finding the perfect spot, they snuggle up close, rub their tired eyes and prepare for a happy journey through Smurf land for the next half-hour. Next to Barney the famous purple dinosaur, these blue, happy go lucky, characters, have won the hearts of millions of little children for years.

Within the Smurf village there are hundreds of Smurfs that stand about "three-apples tall" and live in mushroom houses. Led by Papa Smurf, the eldest Smurf in the village, each Smurf goes about their day completing their assigned tasks. In comparison to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, each Smurf has a name that goes along with their characteristics. These names range from Handy Smurf to Poet Smurf, all of which describe the tasks that they do within the village and the emotions they display. Though it may appear that the Smurfs live a happy and conflict free life, this is not always the case. These tiny blue characters have acquired a few enemies through their time spent in Smurf Village, the toughest of them all being Gargamel. Gargamel is the evil wizard in the forest that goes about his days plotting ways in which he can capture the Smurfs for eating purposes and ways to destroy them all together.

However, the Smurfs have never let Gargamel's evil plans follow through. The Smurfs has been one the number one children´s TV show since the early 1980's and has been present in children´s lives since. Like most television shows however, the Smurfs had encountered many controversial issues during its early span on television. Most debated was the lack of female Smurfs within the show. Though this posed as a problem for some, the presence of characters such as Smurfette and Nanny Smurf had been created in hopes of creating some sort of balance.

Though there have been several other hit children´s television shows created since the brining of the Smurfs, it is clear that most have not been as successful as the Smurfs. The Smurfs can still be viewed today on popular kid´s channels today such as Cartoon Network. To keep the Smurfs alive, wake the kids and take a journey into Smurf Village to see which Smurf will fight off Gargamel in this weeks showing of The Smurfs.
