Bush encourages his own brand of fanaticism

Alex Zakson
October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched the world’s first man made earth satellite Sputnik. President Eisenhower’s Defense Department reacted by funding scientific work that culminated in the launching of Explorer I on January 31, 1958. President Kennedy pushed ahead, which not only landed Americans on the moon, but spawned great scientific achievements. Many of today’s scientists were educated as a consequence of these events, and thanks to the awakening of America to importance of science, their achievements (integrated circuits, microprocessors, software technology, etc.) have completely transformed our world.

On September 11, 2001 Islamic suicide bombers launched a terror attack on America, the first major terrorist act against America. President Bush’s Administration responded to this act with force. It launched wars against Afghan terrorists and Iraq.

The Islamists have their Madrasas, where they teach their children hatred of those who do not follow Islam, terrorize the Islamic citizenry to shun Democracy as un-Islamic, provide funding for suicide missions in Western and Islamic countries, trample on women’s rights, ignore individual rights and promote the establishment of Theocracies.

The Bush Administration is trying to duplicate their extremist views. It is giving Federal funds to Religious schools, sullies those who oppose its policies, nominates judges and cabinet members who have little regard for individual rights, and at every turn tries to turn back the clock on women’s rights, civil rights, environmental preservation, and science. It is strongly promoting religion in government. Do you suppose it is trying to establish a Theocracy?

The administration’s opposition to stem cell research on religious grounds is well known; its latest salvo is against the theory of evolution. Since it ’s only a theory, they argue, intelligent design should be substituted, or given equal prominence in the school curriculum. What’s next? Since quantum physics is only a theory, should we give up all the new tools and gadgets based on this theory? Since theory of relativity is only a theory, should we be teaching our children that up is up and down is down, that’s why things fall. Since the big bang theory is only a theory, should we assume all the stars were made in less than seven days, and that’s that? How does this differ from the views of the Islamists? After all their view of creation and science closely matches these.

In response to the launch of Sputnik, Ike and JFK encouraged scientific achievement. In response to the fanaticism that launched 9/11 Bush encourages his own brand of fanaticism. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
