If We Could Only...
Our president is a well-meaning, decent individual. Too late did the American voters recognize that he is neither a statesman nor a diplomat, and in this time of dire need, we badly require both.
In order for the shooting to stop in Iraq we must talk. Diplomacy is our only way to end the Iraqi and Palestinian tragedies. It will be extremely difficult for our present government to arrive at acceptable decisions in the Middle East that would be satisfactory to all parties involved. Too much has gone wrong to right the ship in the foreseeable future. Too many concessions will be required from countries of the Middle East to enable us to go forward and establish peace.
New leadership in the United States is required to guide the world on a new course. Regardless of the party destined to win the next election, handling of the middle–east crisis will be the test for our next government. By that time, things probably will have changed in that part of the world but the future will remain clouded.
At the end of the day, diplomacy will be the final answer to all problems of the Middle East. War, be it in Iraq, Lebanon or Israel, will not be won on any battlefield. The statesmen will carry the day, not the generals.
Let us hope that the period until our next presidential election will not be too painful and that our next leaders will not inherit a mess from which, they, too, can not extricate our country.
If we only could forward the clock till the year 2008.
