Schiff Works to Expand Health Education, Career Training
Washington, DC – Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that the Financial Services Appropriations bill includes $200,000 for the Chinatown Service Center (CSC) to expand its Health Career Academy to add a Pharmacy Technician Training for Small Businesses in its Alhambra health clinic. The program will provide participants on-the-job-training for three to 12 months, helping them obtain a pharmacy technician certification and secure job placement upon completion of the program. CSC will also provide follow-up support to individuals who have successfully completed the program and have landed a job in the pharmacy field.
"Small business development and the creation of new jobs are critical to our economic recovery," Rep. Schiff said. "Funding for this program will not only boost employment opportunities for those that have completed the program, but it will also help small, independent pharmacies find the trained pharmacists they need to grow and prosper."
Although the bill still has several more legislative hurdles to clear, inclusion of the funding in the measure is a very positive step.
"The proposed Pharmacy Technician Training Program (PTTP) will offer low- and moderate-income, at-risk, in-school students and out-of-school youth and young adults with excellent opportunities for on-the-job training (OJT) and placement in good jobs in the growing health care industry," said Lawrence J. Lue, Chief Executive Officer of the Chinatown Service Center. "We greatly appreciate and congratulate Congressman Adam Schiff's critical advocacy and support to make this available to our community."
