Classic Championship Wrestling - Event Wrap-up 11.28.06
In-ring action kicked off this week with the ever-present Tim the Baker leading the new tandem of El Oro Guapo and The Inmate out for the opening match. While Guapo ran into some rough luck in his CCW debut last week, Tim the Baker was hoping for a strong first showing from his promising new acquisitions. Hope was in fact a good thing to have in Tim's corner as they would be squaring off with the always ready, always willing, and more than able HNIC.
While the masked duo was ready to go, within a matter of minutes, they found themselves trapped in the HNIC's corner, falling behind quickly. Clearly not in the mood to entertain an upset, the veterans were in control for the vast majority of the match, not letting up an inch until scoring the win, following a big guillotine legdrop by JB Thunder. While Tim the Baker keeps bringing new and interesting competition to Classic Championship Wrestling, it seems the key to returning to success in the managerial ranks is still eluding the Baker. Maybe it's a problem with the oven...
Winners of the Match: The HNIC
Matt Maverick vs. Randy Royal:
Flanked by fellow Brute Squad members K-Lo and Guido Andretti, Randy Royal was looking to put the brakes on Matt Maverick, who judging by the reaction of the crowd as he hit ringside, is building quite a following in CCW with his showings over the last couple of weeks.
Maverick looked to keep a fast pace to try and even out his disadvantage in the strength department, and with success until the anticipated numbers game tilted the odds in Royal's favor. While Royal would score several near-falls in the process, Maverick showed great resilience in between the dirty tricks of the Brute Squad, using every moment of distraction to their advantage.
Both men would collide violently attempting simultaneous cross body blocks, and that may have been the window Maverick needed to a timely comeback. However, Royal was too powerful, too hungry, and too well insured at ringside, and the difference was obvious. Merely taking the match was not enough for the Brute Squad, as they would continue the assault, leaving Maverick in need of assistance to return to the locker rooms. No word was available on Maverick's condition at the time of this column.
Winner of the Match: Randy Royal
Biff Wellington III vs. The Regulator:
The big man from Detroit, The Regulator, came strolling into the CCW Arena looking to keep a hot streak alive with a win over frat-packer Biff Wellington III. BW3, a perpetual fan favorite in Classic Championship Wrestling, arrived to his usual fanfare for what appeared to be a friendly-enough match, including a handshake at the opening bell.
Biff, on the mend from a recent knee injury, went on a tear early, even bringing out the Ole! kick (just missing the full version), only to then fall victim to some baiting by Regulator. While the match may have been friendly, neither men was beyond going to their more traditional offenses. In that vein, Regulator soon turned his attention to BW3's knee after perhaps seeing his opponent come up limping just a bit.
A wise man once said any match is only three seconds away from being over, and this match went a long way to prove that axiom true. In the blink of an eye, before any one, especially the Regulator, knew what hit them, BW3 was getting his hand raised after rolling up the big man with a schoolboy. In a tremendous display of respect following the hard fought match, both men shared another handshake.
Winner of the Match: Biff Wellington III
Taking to the microphone, Wellington then called out CCW Heavyweight Champion Dynamite Derrick, who seemed willing to oblige, if only to get himself out in front of the crowd with the gold over his shoulder. BW3 then went on to say how much he wanted to kick Derrick's tail, as his chance was derailed by the knee injury he suffered during the tournament, not to mention how badly everyone wanted to see it happen. That out of the way, Biff issued the challenge to Derrick to face him for the CCW Title next Tuesday night, to which Derrick quickly responded by informing Wellington he would have to earn the shot first. To play devil's advocate for a moment, you have to admire the logic from Derrick, although the common fan would just as easily dismiss that as a dodge of BW3.
This exchange would bring out CCW Commissioner Chris Alexander, interjecting himself to remind Derrick that CCW regulations stipulated a title defense every 30 days, and in his mind, there was no one better for "The Old School Player" to make that defense against than Wellington, a competitor that Derrick has not beaten!
Kliff Hanger vs. Elmore Fudd (w/Mrs. Elma Fudd):
In a test between two of CCW's more wily grapplers, the always-dangerous Elmore Fudd hit the squared circle with Mrs. Fudd in tow to face off with "The Black Redneck" Kliff Hanger.
While Kliff was in a good mood, as always, Fudd was all business, but before he knew what hit him, he found himself on the wrong side of a big bodyslam by Kliff Hanger. Fudd may have had a bit of trouble getting out of the gates, as soon after the slam, he wound up on the arena floor, trying to perhaps plot a new strategy in the 10 seconds he had. As Kliff Hanger tried to crank up the heat, Fudd was not willing to make it easy, taking control of the match, allowing for brief spells of interference from the omnipresent Elma Fudd.
Before long, both men were struggling to regain the edge, although the end was closer for Kliff Hanger than he realized. As Elma Fudd distracted the ref, Prophet ran out to throw Kliff from the top rope, saving Fudd from any number of aerial assault. Seizing the moment, Fudd would hit the bulldog headlock for the win. Whether or not the Fudds were in on the sneak attack by the Prophet remains unclear, but the last thing they were going to do was argue as they slipped out of sight, victory in hand.
Winner of the Match: Elmore Fudd
The controversy between Kliff Hanger and The Prophet continues to rage, and this latest chapter only goes to further fuel the rivalry! Having seen enough, Commissioner Alexander was at ringside again, this time laying down the law, ordering a Best of 3 series of matches, with the winner gaining a shot at the CCW Heavyweight Championship on January 7! This will at least officially determine who's first in line between Kliff Hanger and The Prophet, as Prophet's claim of being the #1 contender may not be that easy to back up, at least on paper.
The Prophet vs. Jebidiah Blackhawk:
Already angered by the sudden development regarding his #1 contendership, Prophet immediately called for his opponent for the evening, shortly after being joined at ringside by the lovely, if not universally popular, JesseBell. With Jebidiah Blackhawk making his way to the ring, The Prophet was definitely looking to drive his point home, and a win over Blackhawk would go a long way in doing so. Kick-starting the match, Prophet drove full steam ahead, trying to smother Blackhawk at the opening bell. While Blackhawk would mount his own offense, Prophet was on top of his game and at the top of his game. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for JesseBell, who was ejected from ringside for throwing a hand into the match, much to the delight of the capacity crowd! Better luck next week.
As the match wore on, frustration in Blackhawk's resilience added to the frustration from earlier in the night for Prophet, who was building steam until a big missed top-rope legdrop nearly spelled disaster for the Warrior Chief. Speaking of the aforementioned controversy, the revenge of Kliff Hanger would go down shortly after the missed legdrop. As he tried to recover, and perhaps steal the win while he was at it, Prophet looked to finish it as JesseBell returned to ringside, "flirting" with the rookie referee. As this was going on, Kliff Hanger would turn the tables on Prophet, as Blackhawk would score the win after a schoolboy! No doubt the intensity for the first match in the Best of 3 series will be off the charts as payback will be perhaps first and foremost on both men's agendas.
Winner of the Match: Jebidiah Blackhawk
Believe it or not, the chaos didn't end there, and it didn't even involve Prophet or Kliff Hanger! As Blackhawk was celebrating his win, Elmore Fudd hit the ring with a purpose, attacking Blackhawk before getting beaten back out of the ring. Commandeering a microphone, Fudd demanded a match, saying he could beat Blackhawk with one hand tied behind his back! Having one of the busier nights of his administration, Commissioner Chris Alexander was right back out, agreeing with Fudd and booking the match for this next Tuesday, much to the protests of Elmore and Mrs. Fudd both! This one could be pretty entertaining, just to see what Fudd might pull out his sleeve.
"Smooth" Johnny Spade (w/Ms. Holly Wood) vs. Cujo (w/ Felony Foxx):
Live action resumed with Cujo being led to the ring by the sinister Felony Foxx to meet "Smooth" Johnny Spade, accompanied by Miss Holly Wood. While at ringside for Spade once again, one couldn't help but wonder what was going through Holly's mind, since as of late she has clearly become CCW's most beautiful target.
Spade was wrestling with a purpose early, swarming Cujo with move after move, nearly putting an early coda on the bout with a big top rope cross body block. The high-speed arsenal would nearly cost Spade, though, as Cujo would counter an attempted huaracarana by Spade with a powerbomb, opening the door for the big man to try and take control.
A comeback by Spade would result in a superkick, followed by the Spadeton, making it look like for all intensive purposes, the match was over. That wasn't far off the mark, as Felony Foxx would then attack Spade, drawing the disqualification loss for Cujo. Miss Holly Wood, of course, had something to say about this, and the two women quickly wound up nose to nose in the ring. While it didn't meet up to the catfight standards I'm sure the fans had in mind, Miss Holly Wood wasn't in the mood for more shady tactics, knocking Foxx from the ring.
Winner of the Match: "Smooth" Johnny Spade, by disqualification
It's a shame that Commissioner Chris Alexander doesn't get frequent flier miles for his trips from the back to ringside. At the rate he was going tonight, he should have been able to fly to the moon for what would have to be a hard-earned vacation trying to keep order in CCW. Upon hearing Spade's challenge involving getting the ladies into the ring, Alexander ordered a mixed tag team match for next Tuesday! It'll be hard to determine who will be the more combustible element in that match, Spade and Cujo, or Miss Holly Wood and Felony Foxx, but either way, I doubt the fans will come away from that one disappointed.
Main Event: CCW Tag Team Championship - The Fat N The Furious (Jack Black and Vito Andretti) (c) defending against The Brute Squad (K-Lo and Guido Andretti), accompanied by Randy Royal:
I've been touting this match for a few weeks now, and the moment had arrived - The Brute Squad were challenging for the CCW Tag Team Titles. They have made a statement since arriving in CCW, and this time, they'd be facing off with The Fat N The Furious looking to take the final step up the tag team ladder in Classic Championship Wrestling. With Randy Royal at ringside, you couldn't help but call this even odds for "The Illustrious" K-Lo and Guido Andretti.
Bringing the sell-out house to its feet as they made their entrance, the FNF looked to leave Portland in a familiar manner, with the tag belts draped over their shoulders. The match itself started out a back-and-forth affair, as neither team was able to build any kind of solid momentum, showing how much preparation went into the plannign for this match. K-Lo was finally able to break through with an eye rake on Vito, allowing the challengers to establish a big lead, thanks in no small part to some interference from Randy Royal on the outside. Cutting the corner off, Guido and K-Lo ran Vito Andretti through the wringer, frustrating Jack Black, trapped on the outside taking more cheap shots than near-tags.
Perhaps telegraphing his legdrop from the top rope, K-Lo soon found himself helpless on the canvas as Vito finally managed to make the tag to the big man, who promptly started steamrolling both members of The Brute Squad. The confusion in the ranks wouldn't last long, however, as Royal would snag one of the title belts from the announce position (although he did say he was only borrowing it), sliding in the ring and assaulting both FNF members with it, drawing the DQ loss for his partners.
Winners of the Match: The Fat N The Furious, by disqualification, retaining the CCW Tag Team Championship
The attack would bring out CCW Commissioner Chris Alexander yet one more time, as he ordered an immediate rematch for this Saturday night! While the Brute Squad mentioned something about 'being sick,' I'm sure Vito and Jack have a cure in mind for them once the bell rings on this big-time championship grudge match!
