What’s Wrong With America's Drug Policy

Two sister cities on the boarder of Texas / Mexico have become a battleground for drug dealers. They are Laredo Texas and Nuevo Laredo Mexico. 30 years ago, I walked the streets of both cities with little concern for my safety. I‘ve sat in the Plaza of Nuevo Laredo listing to classical music played by local musicians. Today Fox News reports gun battles in the same Plaza. The city is under siege by drug dealers. 41 Americans, kidnapped so far this year. Well over 100 murders have been committed, how is this possible?

I’m not a drug dealer, user, or advocate of drug use. I haven’t a clue how to solve the drug problem that breads such violence. It’s obvious no one else has a clue either. America spends billions on drug enforcement everywhere except where the problem is, with the drug users. Our efforts trying to curtail drug use seems to be failing. What’s wrong, are we using the wrong approach, are we to lenient on drug users? Are the guarantees in the constitution abstracting our government from doing what would curtail drug use? Is drug using another of the pleasures society turns a blind eye to?

If the problem persists until it spreads to other sister cities from Brownsville / Matamoras to San Diego / Tijuana and all cities in-between be assured we’ll have a third war with Mexico. Drug use, drug dealing and official indifference will in the end create a war we don’t want and can ill afford.

Thirty years ago the cost of a Coyote [Smuggler] was fifty or so dollars, today its in the thousands, How do these peasants pay such a high price to cross the border, smuggling drugs of course. It’s a one time thing for most crossing over, hardly the crime of a lifetime. They’re told “The Gringos don’t care, they all use drugs”. By the amounts that come over the border why would they doubt what their told. After all the drug dealers have the protection of the Mexican Federal Police as well as the Local Police. Corruption in the Mexican government has been a problem since Santa Ann’s defeat by the Texicans, possibly even before.

Maybe Bill O’Reilly has a point. Why have troops in Korea, The Balkans, Germany, Japan and a half dozen other places, Who should be protecting their own borders. I’m excluding Iraq Afghanistan and the war on terror. Bring them home to do what they were originally empowered to do, protect America’s borders. Along with that, we need to elect politicians who’ll follow the mandates of the constitution and not those of political correctness.

Perhaps we should lower the Stars and Stripes and run up a flag that says “Bienvenido Todo El Mundo” [The world is welcome.]

Until and unless our congress and the president make it clear to the Mexican government, America will no longer tolerate their assisting their excess population to cross to America. We are going to have a problem. Until and unless the politically correct policy of treating illegals as American citizens we are going to have a problem. Until and unless some people get their hears out of the sand and realize it’s an invasion not much different than an armed invasion America is going to have a problem. That problem borders on being unsolvable at this time. Bring the excess troop home and put them on both borders, lets not discriminate, Canada is also a culprit in allowing, yes even encouraging illegal entry to the US.
