How Violence Shaped America

Ken Hughes
America in entering a stage in it’s growth when violence is no longer an option for defense with much of the population. Negation, pacifism, acquiescence, these are the means to solving differences, so say the weak among us. America has become so successful and so powerful some find it embarrassing. Unfortunately, they’re the vocal among us. They’re the ones who speak out in opposition to America using violent means defending it’s self.

Violence created America, 6,500 men died in the American Revolution and the War of 1812 liberating America from British rule. The British were far less barbaric than the enemy we face today. The colonies fought the revolution over excess taxes. What did it add to America, It created America and later preserved it? At that time, European countries were carving up the new world creating more colonies. President Monroe drew a line in the Atlantic saying, this far no further. It’s known today as the Monroe Doctrine. Had it not been for the stand America took then who knows what language America would be speaking today?

The Mexican War [1846-48] may have been a stretch. It cost 17,000 casualties, all it added to America was doubling the size of the country. It just occurred to me had Mexico won that war we wouldn’t have an illegal immigration problem today. All our movies and TV sit-coms would be in Espanish with a dozen subtitles, If you think not watch television in Taiwan where subtitles cover half the screen.

The American Civil Wear. What can we say, other than we’re still fighting it. The bullets have ceased the rhetoric continues. I correspond with several African American writers. Some not all feel over half a million casualties wasn’t enough of a price to pay. Now the decadents of blacks want money in the form of reparations, regardless of whether they were slaves or not. I’m willing to make a trade, African Americans pay reparations to the descendents of the men killed freeing their ancestors, and I’m willing to consider reparations for Blacks who can prove an ancestor was a slave. Send me my check first, that sounds fair to me. How any Black American can complain when they see how blacks are living in most African countries is beyond me. The treatment of Blacks in Africa is at the hands of their own people not white people. Some people regardless of color just like to bitch.

America’s next major war was the Spanish / American War. It wasn’t much of a war. America only suffered 385 battle deaths. It did free Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippians from Spanish domination. In their usual compassion, America paid Spain for their losses. I marvel at America’s compassion in war. We kick the crap out of some aggressor then hand them a fist full of dollars, as if to apologize.

The first World War didn’t directly involve America, at the time it was felt if the German coalition won there next target would be America, a safe assumption at the time. 321,000 casualties was the price America paid for a couple more generations of freedom from tyrants, freedom has a price brave Americans are willing to pay.

World War Two is the first war American soil, had been bloodied, since the Civil War. The American casualties are listed at 300,000 dead. This was a war where America was challenged directly. Not all Americans were in favor of the way it was conducted. American citizens [of Japanese decent] were incarcerated while their sons fought on the battle fields of Europe. Wars have injustices on both sides. America paid a heavy price and inflicted an even heaver price in limbs and life. In the end death saved lives. The Atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Saved not only American Lives but Japanese as well. An invasion of the Japanese homeland would have extended the war by perhaps years, and certainly would have caused thousands more casualties on both sides.

Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, they can all be questioned as to their accomplishments. To many of us, they served a purpose containing the threat of Communism engulfing much of the world. The argument is mute now the cold war is over. With the exception of North Korea, Cuba and the Islamic world, most of the world is on the way to capitalist economies. That eventfully will breed of form of democracy. It’s one more step on the road to no more violence in the world.

I have a question for the defenders of passivism over violence. Would your way have given us the greatest nation the world has ever known? Would there be an America if the Minute Men ask for negations with the British. Damn I forgot they spent nearly 200 years negotiating with the British. Successful negations come at the barrel end of the gun. History proves this time after time. We are in a war for the survival of a way of life. Let’s not kid ourselves, terrorists will never stop, should they win the battle they’ll turn on each other. Blood and violence excites them not ideology. War is hell, subrogation is further down.
