Hunter Kelly, the 8-year old son of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has died. Hunter suffered from Krabbe’s disease, a fatal disorder that ravages the central nervous system. A foundation named in his honor, Hunter’s Hope, started by his parents in 1997, has raised millions for research of this disease and others like it.

Krabbe’s disease is an inborn neurodegenerative disorder of infancy due to the accumulation of galactocerebroside in the tissues. This is a result of a primary deficiency of galactocerebrosidase, the white matter of the brain, causing demyelination in the presence of inclusion bodies in the Schwann cells. It is considered a rare juvenile and adult form.

It was fitting that Hunter was born on his father’s birthday, Valentine’s Day, as he was the symbol of love for the Kelly family.

He was an inspiration to many around the world for his brave fight. He will be missed.

The foundation has raised more than $6 million and was awarded an additional $3.8 million for its research into neurological diseases, especially Krabbe’s.

Hunter was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Buffalo on Friday, August 05, 2005 after he had a very high fever and his breathing had stopped.

In addition his parents, Hunter are survived by his two sisters, Erin, 10, and Camryn, 6.

The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at the Hamburg Wesleyan Church in Buffalo.
