The Netherlands To Ban Burqas: Amen!

Robert Paul Reyes
“The Dutch government, facing re-election next week, said Friday it plans to draw up legislation “as soon as possible” banning the head-to-toe garment known as burqas and other clothing that covers the entire face in public places.” - From the Associated Press

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, a culturally and ethnically diverse city, where every mode of attire is acceptable.

I celebrate diversity and I value freedom of expression, but I support the Dutch government’s decision to ban the burqa.

The burqa is a divisive symbol, it screams I am different than you and I don’t even want you to understand me - that’s why I’m covering myself up completely

The burqa is also a symbol of Islam’s enslavement of women; this odious sheet covers a woman completely, except for her eyes, destroying her individuality.

But it is not for that reason that I favor banning the burqa — it’s for security reasons. Post 9/11 we can’t afford to allow people walk the streets with clothing that hides their identities. It’s for that same reason that in many municipalities it’s a crime to wear a mask in public.

Not to mention that a woman could hide several explosive belts under a burqa. If I’m at a football game and a woman with a burqa sits next to me, I’ll go home and watch the game on my TV set.

The Netherlands, once had a laissez-faire attitude toward immigrants, but it is has now hardened its attitude toward Muslim minorities.

Whether it’s in France, England or the Netherlands, Muslim immigrants make no attempt whatsoever to assimilate. Muslim communities in Europe are a breeding ground for terrorists, who are committed to destroying the countries that welcomed them with open arms.

If European countries are to survive as secular societies not only must they ban burquas, but they must also put a screeching halt to immigration from Muslim countries.

In America we don’t have the same problem with Muslim immigrants, America has an almost limitless capacity to welcome and assimilate newcomers. Muslim immigrants in this country have a long history of working hard, opening small businesses and becoming an integral part of this great nation.

But we must be vigilant and not allow radical Muslim clerics to enter this country so they can preach their noxious extremist message.

From the Associated Press:

The Netherlands is deeply divided over moves by the government to stem the tide of new arrivals and compel immigrants to assimilate into Dutch society. The issue was given added urgency with the 2004 slaying of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh by a Muslim fanatic and the failed attempt to expel a Somali-born critic of Islam.”

If the Netherlands is to survive as a democracy is must unite in opposition to Muslim immigration,. Banning burqas is a good first step.
