Can Nancy Pelosi Make The House Honest

Ken Hughes
For the past 12 years and more recently the past 6 years Democrats have been telling us how the Republican administration is ruining the American way, this despite the most amazing economic indicators in our history, unprecedented security we are living in the best of times. Now that Democrats will be in charge of congress how will they improve on or even sustain the current economic growth? Will they keep the terrorists from our country, if they dismantle Homeland security how will they guarantee our protection?

Anyone who understands the way government works can’t possible hold one man accountable for all the things people would like but can’t possible have. When American troops rolled into Baghdad like General Patton’s Army rolled over Europe in WWII everyone was elated, it was like making it through McDonalds drive up in record time. When the clean-up came and the real fighting began President Bush had supposedly led us into a quagmire. All those Democrats who voted to invade Iraq now did a 180 degree turn, claiming they were misled. As I recall they were the ones chomping at the bit to give President Clinton authority to invade Iraq and bring Saddam Hussein down.

Congress and much of the American public believe what they think and say is the way it should be. There’s little consideration for the thoughts of those who our decision will effect in the future. America should be there to assist not be the sole decision maker, that seems to be the direction the new congress is taking.

Nancy Pelosi and her marry band of braggarts have made some rather startling claims of what they’ll do come January 2nd. Whatever she tries will take the approval of some Republicans. Congress has no constitutional authority to instruct the president how to conduct the war in Iraq. The most they can do is cut off funding and if they do that they’ll become a pariah in the eyes of most Americans. Leaving our brave young men and women volunteer soldiers holding the bag isn’t going to set well with the public.

President Bush will still have his veto power along with a very large minority in both houses of congress. Nancy Pelosi and her party will find the going rough if Republicans get some backbone they haven’t shown in the past 6 years and stand up for what they believe. If as Nancy Pelosi claims she will work for a more cooperative atmosphere between the political parties then perhaps congress can accomplish some of the things that need attention.

January 2nd this nation will face the hour of truth, “Can Democrats govern in a non-partisan way?” If they’re sincere in what they’re saying about working with the other side of the aisle and the president then they’ll be a welcome change from past performances of both parties.

The media’s already skeptical The New York Times ran an editorial November 17th criticizing Nancy Pelosi for backing John Murtha as majority leader over Steny Hoyer who is a longtime advocacy of hers. USA Today is also questioning if Democrats can avoid their partisan politics of the past 6 years. It would appear the media is closing in on the new house leadership letting them know the free lunch may be going over to the other side.

Many of the responsible Republicans understand both Republican houses of congress drifted away from the conservative values that got them elected in 1994 and 2000. Now we’re hearing words of wisdom from some of them they’re beginning to understand loosing both houses of congress wasn’t a Democratic victory but a well deserved Republican loss.

The founding fathers wrote, fought for and ratified a constitution that was to govern this nation forever. In the beginning changes were made to the constitution by a process of amendments. More recently the legislative and judicial branches of our government have chosen to bypass the amendment process and make unconstitutional changes by legislative and judicial activism.

The original constitution says in a few words what man’s been unable to interpret with billions of words. The constitution was written on less than half dozen pagers the interpretations would fill the Grand Canyon and more. The Constitution like the Ten Commandments was intended to be nonpartisan and nonsectarian as such both have withstood the test of time. Man shouldn’t try to change what has been divinely inspired. Let’s pray the new congress realizes they’re the servants not the masters and act accordingly.
