I’m Through Defending RINO’S

Ken Hughes
Not only did we Conservative Republicans lose our majority in the house and senate we lost an opportunity to bring America back to when Ronald Reagan elevated us up from the depths of despair and self loathing that the Johnson, Nixon, and Carter years brought us down to.

When George McGovern took the nominating process out of the smoke filled back rooms of party politics in 1972 he changed the course of politics and the Democratic Party forever. A new from of socialism was born and adopted by the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. It’s a progressive cancer that will destroy our constitutional freedoms in time.

Ronald Reagan gave America a new sense of pride. He managed to regenerate us into what we had once been the greatest nation on earth. He was responsible for the demise of the USSR and the rebirth of Russia and many other Eastern European nations. Republican Congressmen were given an opportunity to continue to bring the country back to a constitutional government, they were given the blueprints by Reagan and they failed us.

In 1994 Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House, and a few newly elected freshmen manage to create and implement the “Contract with America.” This promise to the voters was an important commitment by Republicans to alter the way congress had been conducting business in the past. Most important, the contract repealed many of the special privileges Congress had been giving themselves, immunity for conduct the average citizen would be prosecuted for. The contract was intended to return constitutional rules back to Congress -- something it hadn’t followed in years.

The contract with America was the salvation of the Clinton presidency. Had it not been for Newt Gingrich and his band of ethical members of Congress, Republicans would never have rescued both houses of Congress from the Democrats who turned it into a subculture of a Liberal Supreme Court.

When Clinton realized he couldn’t beat them, he joined them and took credit for their accomplishments.

Congress is the closest thing to Royalty America has. Like all who are ungovernable Congress resented the new rules they were be told they had to adhere to. Some in the house retaliated against Newt and his band of reformers. Newt was ousted and Congress went back to business as usual.

When one political party gains power in Congress it doesn’t mean the other party is no longer a factor. This new Democratic majority has a slim margin and the Senate even less. The President still has his veto power for the next two years should he chose to use it. The Republicans left in Congress can control the excess of both houses should they choose to do so when something doesn’t look kosher to them.

The new Democratic congress has chosen to appoint their leaders rather than elect them as is the custom. The elections will take place in January when the new congress convenes but they’ll be a mere formality. Nancy Pelosi has chosen her cabinet and it’s not likely to change. There are some problems with some of their pronouncements of things they intend to change. They have no authority to determine events in Iraq. The conduct of war is the sole responsibility of the President as Commander in Chief. Rolling back the Bush tax cuts may not be as easy as they think; their majority is slim at best and can’t override a veto by the President should he chose to use the privilege the constitution gives him.

This is an opportunity for Congress, especially Republicans, to shed the royal adornments and realize they’re just average Americans with a job. Their bosses -- the voters -- are sending a message: “Get with the program or get out.” The problems this country faces were generations in the making and can be attributed to both political parties and it’ll take bipartisan efforts to solve them.

The voters didn’t necessarily vote for Democrats any more than they voted against Republicans. In 1994, 06, 08 and 2000, 02 and 04 Republicans where charged with cleaning up politics and they failed. Republicans followed years of tradition is selecting their leadership. When Nancy Pelosi coined the phrase “Culture of corruption” it applied to both political parties not just Republicans. The next two years will give the Republican Congress an opportunity to prove they’re better at managing the economy, security and the affairs of state in general than Democrats.

If America is to regain creditability among the nations of the world we must first get our political house in order. Our claim that we are the world's only super power is about to change as China is creeping up on us -- perhaps not militarily, but economically. That’s where all future power will be determined. America deservedly has a long way to go to regain the respect of the world communities. My suggestion is they stop talking and start listening.
