A Peaceful Revolution

John H. Adler
Unfortunately, there is not a parliamentary “NO CONFIDENCE” vote written into our constitution. However, every two years at the polls we can express our opinions about our government. Tuesday’s vote resulted in a peaceful rebellion by the American people. We told our President and the governing bodies what we really thought of the job they are doing.

Not that the winning party did such a good job in protecting us from the quagmire in which our nation finds itself. I am not sure at all that many changes will take place in the next two years if the President insists on “staying the course,” throwing more lives and money into a lost cause.

At the time of this writing, final count of the apportionment of new senate seats has not yet been established. Replacement of the present Secretary of Defense and a committee to appraise the current conduct of the Iraq war appear to be steps in the right direction. Will it sway this President to change his mind? Will he realize that the majority of the American people oppose this unjust incursion into Iraq? Will he change course or will he obstinately continue this folly unabated? Aside from the negative political fall-out, has he no regard for human life?

We are being told that if we leave Iraq there is the danger of civil war. What, in heaven’s name, does he think is going on there now? We have very few friends in Iraq. Soldiers of our coalition, attacked from all sides, stand between the fighting elements. We have become the common enemy. The only thing opposing factions agree on is the removal of our troops. Does our prolonged presence in that country make sense?

Will anyone come up with a realistic plan to withdraw our military from Iraq? We seem to be squeamish to use the word “withdrawal”; perhaps “repositioning” might sound more acceptable. Whatever you want to call it, we have lost this ill-fated adventure and, instead, have enlarged our circle of enemies.

Make no mistake: the threat of terrorism facing us and the rest of the world will continue unabated for a long time to come.

Are we safer now than before the attack on Iraq? I believe the opposite to be true!
