One solution to America's election Mandate

Isabel P. Ball
The American people have spoken, loud and clear, in the recent election result. They have given complete control of the House and the Senate to the Democrats. Single most identified factor in the mandate has been the protracted war in Iraq.

The Democrats intense campaign to gain control of the House and the Senate, I think, born out of a brooding fear from President Bush’s claim that the Iraq problem will have to be resolved by the next White House tenant. Optimistic democrats are better served now with two more years of Mr. Bush to sit down with him and talk about a solution to remove Iraq’s quagmire from the Democrats political pathways, should and when the latter also wins the White House in 2008.

In retrospect, maybe the Bush Administration had been, indeed, headstrong and too focused on routing the Muslim infidels and insurgents in Iraq, which toll wise, is proving too problematic, as in the increasing number of casualties, both on the Americans and Iraqi civilians. Casualties are constant in a war zone, and as long as wars are being fought with deadly weapons, and with an attrition tactic agenda, mounting lost of lives and costs are inseparable results, causing Americans at home to squirm and be angry about. Americans have been seeing happening in Iraq a war that seems to have no end, as the Bush Administration has elected to transplant democracy in Iraq.

In my opinion, the route taken by the Administration to promulgate peace and political stability in the country through democracy is a generational project, therefore, indefinite. America is literally starting on with new government structure installation. The process is incremental with no certainty in the intended results. Gauging from the Muslim factions creating chaos and deaths in Iraq, America’s perseverance is thwarted, immediately laid to waste by the insurgents. To push through the planned democracy in Iraq would mean prolonged stay of the American and allied forces there, and the likelihood of an increased casualties, costs that are now bleeding the American coffers with looming destabilization of the American and world economy, and a continuing standoff with the Muslims, seemingly emboldened by the American aggression.

So much talk about the problem, now let’s switch discussion to the much-awaited SOLUTION. Bush, in his election proceeding speech wittily asked what specifics did the Americans wanted the Democrats to do to solve the problem. That, off course, is something to be talked and discussed about inter-party, Republicans and Democrats. From what I have been sensing, the Americans demand solution to the problem, and which has been loudly flaunted by such nonsensical crusades of a killed U.S. soldier’s mother, Cindy Sheehan, (Nobel Prize nominee), is the outright and immediate withdrawal of the U.S. troops in Iraq. Sending the troops home, undoubtedly, to the lay and unsophisticated about the Muslim issues, agenda and nature is the most sensible and easy out by the Americans from the chaotic situation in Iraq. But to heed the popular call to leave Iraq altogether appears illusory and dangerous. The move would be tantamount to unfurling the white flag of defeat for America, and to the nations of the world adhering to democratic ideals and human rights. Also, leaving Iraq leaderless, as would be the result from a haphazard withdrawal, would create a vacuum for the insurgents to fill in with Muslim radicalism, the very acid ideology that is corroding America’s effective leadership in the world. Already, the Shiites and the Sunni’s natives of Iraq, are infighting for power, and on the wings, like vultures, are the Al Qaeda and other vested Muslim insurgents machineries been in operation to dislodge America’s strength and resolve in Iraq. Creating another governance much more atrocious and fierce than Saddam Hussein’s would be unconscionable and irresponsible a decision.

Firepower which remains the weapon of war, unfortunately, begets more violence, and against a very determined foe as the Muslims—historically, fierce and ferocious--only conflagrates the equation. In response, the Muslim extremists have created their own brand of weapon, so powerful, it defies firepower we know and fear as the human bombs.

What is there left, apart from military solution, to ease, appease, or de-kindle the Muslim threat? In a nonviolent way, the NGO (None Governmental organizations), or simply nonprofit organizations, may offer the solution. The world needs to seed, grow, and nurture more of these peace-oriented advocacy groups.

I, for one, has created and founded a nonprofit group TOGETHER FOR WORLD PEACE which aims to outreach to the American Muslim citizens open a dialogue. Having had stayed in Pakistan for some years, and lived with the natives, in every sociological setting, I’ve learned a great deal about their culture and mindset as Muslims. Applying that same knowledge to open up communication between the Americans and the American Muslims, in my belief, would be a step forward to fostering understanding, cooperation, unity, and eventually, trust. In turn, these Muslim Americans can become ambassadors of goodwill in their own native lands, speaking for and representing America in its natural friendly and compassionate light as a country. America, as we see and hear is suffering from low respect and regard from the Muslim nations of the world. America is perceived as the enemy, the Satan aimed to be destroyed by the Muslim fanatics crusading to dominate the world.

Without saying, we have enough of ideological infightings, where our basic existence continue to be threatened, day-by-day, where we are treading on live wires that could ignite at any moment with catastrophic result, where the quality of life has degraded to incivility, and when our world, our own home is further planned for annihilation, like the animals, we have no other recourse but to call an SOS. That help is within our capacity to create and make to stave off the threat of the ferocity of nuclear war, create an accord towards a world peaceful for now and tomorrow.

Together For World Peace is seeking for members, volunteers, and donations.
