United States extends long arm of law into Canada

Robert Rouse
Do George Bush and the Republicans have their eye on making Canada one of their first targets in World Government? The last time I checked, Canada was a sovereign nation of which we hold no jurisprudence over. Not that anything like that would stop our government when we want something. Last week, Canadian authorities arrested a man because the US wanted them to.

Huh?

You heard me right. Last week, the US Drug Enforcement Agency issued an arrest warrant for Canadian marijuana legislation activist, Marc Emery. It turns out Mr. Emery has been selling cannabis seeds through the mail to US citizens. Now, the US wants him prosecuted. This confuses me a little. Emery is in Canada the law he broke was a US law; therefore we want to bust him. No, sorry, it still doesn't make any sense.

Last Friday, Vancouver police raided Emery’s office and store and arrested two other marijuana activists (the US wants those two as well now). Emery was arrested in Nova Scotia where he was preparing to speak at a pro-pot rally. What makes all of this a little murky is the fact that although it is also illegal to sell pot seeds in Canada, no one in that country has been prosecuted (or even investigated) for that "crime" in many years. Our friends to the north have a little better understanding about marijuana than our prurient leaders in the US. It appears most still believe in the mythos created by Harry J. Anslinger in the 1930s.

Emery is not your average pot advocate; he is also the head of the British Columbia Marijuana Party and was once a candidate for mayor of Vancouver. In a way, that makes this even more of a political statement. So I say to each and every Canadian who reads this, whether you agree with Emery's policies or not, let your government know this is wrong. There is no need for you to acquiesce to the demands of the United States. Vaunt your sovereignty and stand up to the United States.

As for Americans, we don't need to bully other nations. When did we become the voice of the world? It is not our job to foist our opinions, laws and backward mores on other nations. Its no wonder Bush wants a man like Bolton in the UN. He's decided we need to assert ourselves over everyone else and the biggest problem with that policy is most nations, thankfully, will eventually start ignoring us and doing things their own way (which is how it should be).

Viva la France!

Exactly! The French were not afraid to stand up to us over Iraq and it appears they were right to do so. Oh, Canada . . . show the US your French side. Tell George Bush and the US DEA to stick it where the sun don't shine . . . like say . . . up their Mammoth Cave!
