Statement: Cancellation of California Special Election

Statement from Secretary of State Bruce McPherson’s Press Office Regarding the Cancellation of the Special Election

Two reports in today's newspapers stated that the Secretary of State has a legal opinion on the cancellation of the November 8 special statewide election.

This is not correct. The Secretary of State does not have a legal opinion nor do we plan to issue an opinion on how or whether a special statewide election can be cancelled once it has been called by the Governor. There is no law - either in the Constitution or the California Elections Code - that addresses this issue.

It is our job to run elections and make sure they are run smoothly, professionally and in a non-partisan manner. We are partnering with county elections officials to move forward with the November 8 election.
