Casting the Bums Out!
When the patriarchs of my family came over, they decided then and there who they were. They were Americans. As such, they identified with the culture, language, and lifestyle. They did not speak the native tongue. They became English speaking Americans. To them, America meant freedom, opportunity, and a chance to make a better life. They realized who they were and where they were. For them, the place called America made a difference.
Today as I see election after election, no real change comes. Oh yes, the party affiliations who hold the majority changes from time to time. In all, though, the conquest of one party over another to hold the coveted speaker’s platform is one of pride. The winning of an election is also one of ‘I told you so’.
As an American I have seen little difference in the real policies of the nation’s lawmakers. The democrats and republicans both do more arguing than anything else. When they do agree, then it’s for both their benefits. Little gets done to help the people. The borders still are not secure. Our young boys and girls are still dying in Iraq with Afghanistan developing into a major drug empire. Before this war there was the Gulf war and before that Kosovo. Wars always seem to go on, no matter the party in power. The nation’s health care is a travesty, with costs going up all the time. Taxes that we pay are unfair, illegal, and provide more opportunity for the rich and corporate giants, than anyone else. Gas and related products go up with a whim and a whisper making the oil companies richer than ever. All the while, the family who needs to get around faces high costs.
In this election I decided to vote. I was not going to as I saw so much of the bums I voted for do nothing. Then at the last moment after a visit to my family’s homestead, I felt the need to vote. Maybe my parents and grandparents were telling me to give it one more try. I know they loved this country and what it stands for.
Today, I have been ashamed to be an American. The values and moral crisis we are facing as a nation is huge. The political atmosphere is a nightmare of ego’s and slick ads. The leaders of this nation have decried the constitution while judges ignore the basic rights the same document affords people. Our nation is in a dire situation. If those we elect cannot put the ego away and work together, then we will have to do something. We had one revolution to get rid of a tyrant government. Maybe another one is due now. Maybe we need to cast all the bums out and start over.
I know one thing; the next election is already on the minds of many political pundants. They are getting their slick ads and neatly woven messages ready to convince you they are the ones to be elected. What we need to do is get off our butts and really do something. Something like make our message loud and clear. Stop arguing, stop politicizing, and get along. Do something worthwhile for the American people and the nation we love. Get along and defend the constitution. Get along and take care of those who you represent. Get along and remember, this is supposed to be a nation of the people, for the people, and by the people.
Oh, and one more thing. We do not want a North American union. We are America. We do not want to become a New World Order. We are America. We do not want to speak some other language. We are English speaking Americans.
