The BP Oil Spill: Why I Don't Give a Damn
Not that it matters, but I thought I´d chime in on this whole business of the BP oil spill. Now, most of you reading this will know what I´m talking about. If you don´t, Google it. I´m not a reporter. And I´m not your teacher.
That being said, I stopped giving a damn about this the moment I started hearing about it. Spilt milk, folks. It´s done. Over the past weeks I have grown increasingly sick and tired of people saying we should have done this, or we should have done that. And while I agree this White House is filled with thugs and incompetents, once something like this happens there is blessed little you can do. Especially when you´re out in the middle of nowhere and a mile down. If drilling were allowed closer to shore, it would have been less complicated to repair. But no. This country is not interested in solving its manufactured energy problem.
In a way this is incredibly funny. I love – absolutely love – watching people enraged about something they have absolutely no control over. It´s done. I has happened. It´s in the past. And you deal with it. The only real tragedy in all this is a bunch of white, snotty, rich people won´t get skin cancer from being on certain beaches. But I can dream.
If we were drilling on land where we know the oil is, this wouldn´t happen.
The Earth is a self-correcting system. It will cleanse itself. Yes, some birds and fish will die, but they will anyway in time. What has happened has happened. Learn from it, and shut up. If Katrina taught us anything it should be that the power of the ocean, and of nature itself, cannot be underestimated. Yeah, there´s a bunch of oil out there, but the ocean will vomit it out. If it inconveniences the wealthy – which is the real source of the outrage, not environmentalism – so be it.
The biggest laugh out of all of this is that someone felt they needed to call James Cameron in on this. Why didn´t I think of this? In an environmental crisis, you automatically call in an inexperienced Hollywood egomaniac with no engineering background to give advice. My God I feel stupid for not having thought of that! I mean, along with teaching your kids to avoid strangers be sure to tell them that, if they´re in a crisis, call in a leftist wackjob film maker to solve problems that he has not one clue about.
Boy, do I feel dumb.
