More than 800 local students attend Education Outreach event hosted by the Ventura County Ballet Company

(VENTURA, CALIF) -- On May 21, more than 800 elementary students from schools in the El Rio, Oxnard and Ventura Unified School Districts participated in a unique education outreach program sponsored by the Ventura County Ballet Company (VCBC).

Prior to the lift of the stage curtain, children were giddy with anticipation to see excerpts from the company´s current production of Sleeping Beauty – A Fairytale Ballet, choreographed by Marina Fliagina.

The treat of live ballet was preceded with a school lesson in performing arts by Colleen O'Callaghan, a former ballet dancer and current director of outreach for VCBC and director of curriculum at Ballet Academy Ventura, VCBC´s official ballet school.

O'Callaghan encouraged every child and adult to stand up from their seats and rise to the occasion, demonstrating the "dancer´s alphabet," or positions. Following along, children from the ages of 3 to 10 learned classic stands and jumping in unison.

Prior to the ballet, teachers were provided with lesson plans to prepare classrooms for the experience. The extension of learning ballet in the classroom was brought full-circle with the outing.
