Saddam Found Guilty
Here are some of the things we’ve heard on the airwaves in the past few days, “What will happen if Saddam is acquitted?” That wasn’t about to happen, that was obvious when the chief justice friendly to Saddam was removed. “Will a guilty verdict cause a civil war in Iraq?” Not only is there an insurgent war in Iraq there’s a civil war by any normal standards. “What will Iraq’s neighbors think?” What they say publicly may not be what they say privately, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia will all feel more secure when Sadam’s been executed. More important what will the majority of Iraqi citizens feel and will the media honestly report their feelings? As this Sunday moves on Iraqis are rejoicing at Saddam’s death sentence, earlier media reports had Iraqis going to the street in protest of the sentence. It turns out there were only a hand full of protesters and now there are thousands rejoicing.
Today on one of those Sunday “B” rated political pundit shows we heard the following comments, “How will President Bush feel about Saddam’s being found guilty?” The answer to that question seems obvious and needs no comment. “Will Saddam’s conviction effect the coming elections in America,” why would they? “Will Saddam’s conviction benefit Republicans or Democrats the most?” How can this be spun into a political advantage for ether party it has nothing to do with domestic politics.
Why can’t the media see the trial of Saddam Hussein for what it was convicting a mass murder of crimes against humanity? Why has the media tried to make Saddam Hussein into some kind of an international icon? It wasn’t that long ago he was hiding in a dugout avoiding capture. His bravado was short lived when the American troops arrived in Baghdad. Prior to his capture Saddam was the bad man who went to the hills to carry on the fight against American Imperialism. Instead Saddam hid in a secret bunker like the coward he is.
America invaded Iraq on the premise Saddam’s Republican Guard were an elite fighting force. Saddam had biological weapons and possibly the makings of a small dirty bomb. Saddam and his Army folded like a cheap suitcase leaving his civilian population to face the invaders / liberators without protection is this an action the media cares to glorify?
This to will pass, now that Saddam’s trial is over and he’s been pronounced guilty the media will move on to the next incident they can generate a mega disaster out of. The media no longer report’s news they feel compelled to create news then editorialize every story. Usually their opinions come before the facts are known and are seldom accurate.
Is this what we’re to expect in the 21st century?
