Holy Macaca! James Webb Leads George Allen In Latest Poll
Democrat James Webb is slightly ahead of Republican incumbent Sen. George Allen with a week to go in one of the most contentious Senate races in history.
The Opinion Research Poll shows that among likely voters, Webb was the choice of 50 percent of those surveyed while 46 percent favored Allen and 4 percent were undecided.
It seems like eons ago, but just a couple months ago, George Allen had a double-digit lead. Allen’s camp did not take Webb seriously; he was regarded as a no-name candidate with no chance of winning in a red state.
Allen’s handlers perceived the Virginia Senate race as a means of showcasing Allen as presidential material.
Then came Allen’s August 11 ”Macaca” moment which opened the door for a tidal wave of allegations about his racist behavior toward African Americans in the past.
The Macaca slip and the ensuing stumbles cost Allen a few points, but the polls still showed him in the lead. Unfortunately in a state where Confederate flags and mullets are as ubiquitous as Golden Arches, an accusation of racism is far from the unpardonable sin.
Then with just over a week to go before the election Allen scraped the bottom of his bag of dirty tricks, and he took a few salacious excerpts from Webb’s novels and tried to paint the Democratic challenger as a pervert.
Apparently this was the last straw for many Virginians, they were completely turned off by Allen’s low down trick. They realized that Allen was trying to smear Webb by taking a few racy passages out of context.
James Webb is a decorated war hero, a brilliant novelist and a statesman, and if there is a God, he will be elected to the Senate.
George Allen can take his bag of dirty tricks back to his Confederate flag decorated home and dream about what could have been.
