Nearly Waterless Washing Machines – Are They Ideal?

Jerrick KM Foo
2011 marks the year of nearly waterless washing machines. Xeros, a UK-based company, has been developing these washers that will only use one cup of water. That sounds impossible considering the amount of water necessary to soak your clothes and rinse them.

But the Science behind the nearly waterless washers does not involve the use of detergents to wash the grime and dirt off your clothes. It uses beads instead. These are very tiny plastic beads that will absorb the dirt and grime from your clothes. Once you have completed the washing cycle, the beads are collected and re-used for the next laundry cycle.

This is just one of the numerous attempts in making washing machines that are a lot more eco-friendly. As you know, laundry appliances are some of the biggest consumers of energy and water in the household. Through the use of these nearly waterless washers, there is a possibility of conserving up to 90 percent less water and cutting back on energy cost by up to 30 percent.

But are these really ideal? Many people who have been anticipating the launching of these new innovations think the use of beads is skeptical. The tiny beads can be cumbersome to collect after the washing cycle. In addition to that, these beads may accumulate in our clothes´ pockets. Its efficiency might compromise our washing convenience. Also, transporting and selling of these beads might still use up fossil fuel. This does not strike us as being the eco-friendliest way to wash clothes.

We laud the ingenuity behind this. But we have to withhold judgement on its real efficiency until they become available in the market. In the mean time, there are various ways for us to cut back on energy and water consumption.

Plan your laundry days. The goal here is to accumulate dirty garments so you can wash in bigger laundry loads. Washing in full loads will allow you to run only a few laundry cycles. As opposed to frequently washing small laundry loads, this is a more economical choice.

Opt for liquid detergent instead of powder detergent because this is much easier to dissolve. Powder detergents do not easily get dissolved in cold water so you might need to run an extra rinse cycle to wash off the soap suds completely. Also refrain from overusing detergents.

Pre-treat stains in your clothes. Use the hot water temperature sparingly because this is one of the biggest consumers of energy. By removing stains before putting clothes in your laundry, you do not have to use the hot water temperature cycle.
