Oil, Our Lifeblood?

John H. Adler
Could we survive without fossil fuel? It seems possible that one of these years we are going to be put to the test.

If the Islamic revolution continues, Saudi Arabia will have trouble retaining their monarchy. An overthrow of the Saudi Family would endanger our supply of oil as they are major suppliers.

Iran, can and will, open and close the oil spigot at their pleasure, using it as a bargaining chip. They will take us to the brink if the timing is right for them.

Iraq’s oil will flow as long as our troops remain. In the unlikely event that we will eventually depart and leave a friendly government behind, Iraq will remain an important source for us. Otherwise, who knows?

Russia can, and will, certainly drive a hard bargain. World dominance is the issue. Russia’s influence in the world, particularly in Europe, would greatly increase.

Venezuela’s internal politics are the answer to our relationship with that country. If it were up to Chavez, not one drop of oil would go to the United States. Personal animosity between the two presidents has obviously intruded. Diplomacy would appear to be the answer but, as we have experienced, we are not very good at that.

Our own oil supplies plus other North-American oil sources are substantial but not enough to supply our country as well as the entire free world.

In my opinion, sufficient alternate supplies are far in the future requiring almost all of our industries to undergo dramatic changes.

In the meantime:

HAPPY MOTORING.
