Rush Limbaugh, Michael J. Fox And Parkinson's Disease
Fans of his radio show are called "dittoheads" because they tend to blindly follow where their beloved talkmeister leads. This gives Limbaugh tremendous influence on the political process, and that's why he can get away with being such a blowhard.
Limbaugh used to play "My Boy Lollipop" as a theme song whenever he mentioned gay Rep. Barney Frank. This is what passes for wit and sophistication in Limbaugh's universe.
Liberals routinely denounce Limbaugh for his crude and blustering manner, but conservatives are afraid to speak out against him because they need his support.
But now Limbaugh has done something that is so evil, that even diehard conservatives should join liberals in condemning him.
In response to an advertisement Michael J. Fox filmed in support of stem cell research, Limbaugh accused Fox of not taking his medication before filming to show extreme symptoms in the video. Limbaugh even implied that the beloved actor was faking his symptoms altogether.
Limbaugh should be the last one to bring up the subject of medication. Limbaugh has a well documented problem with abusing prescription drugs and he was recently questioned at an airport for possessing a bottle of Viagra under a false name.
From the Washington Post:
"Possibly worse than making fun of someone’s disability is saying that it’s imaginary. That is not to mock someone’s body, but to challenge a person’s guts, integrity, sanity."
Only an idiot would imply that Fox was faking his symptoms to garner sympathy for himself and his cause. I guess Al Franken is right, Limbaugh is "A Big Fat Idiot".
From thinkprogress.org:
"An official of the National Parkinson Foundation said movements like those exhibited by Fox are the result of taking medication to treat the disease (Parkinson's Disease), which would otherwise result in rigidity. When you see someone with those movements, it's not because they have not taken medication but because they probably have taken medication for some time."
I am rarely as outraged as I am now by Limbaugh's despicable comments. My father suffered from Parkinson's Disease and he exhibited symptoms almost identical to those of Fox.
If conservative politicians and pundits fail to criticize Limbaugh, it will be yet another example of their timidity and hypocrisy.
Limbaugh should immediately apologize to Fox and to everyone afflicted with Parkinson's disease, and he can begin to make amends by making a sizeable contribution to fight Parkinson's disease.
