THE ROT IN THE SYSTEM

I am very surprised at the reaction now, by the American people to the outcome of the destruction in Iraq today. It seems to me that the vast generality of Americans are oblivious of the real situation around the world. I will literally compare this to the proverbial saying of “the man who could not see beyond his huge nose”. I feel this way because prior to the actual decision by the American government under President George W. Bush, I recall that there were so many nations in opposition to the war in Iraq including France, Russia, Germany and China. These countries voiced their fears based on the facts available at that time that there was no imminent threat from Iraq. Just like any sovereign nation, Iraq and it’s leader in the person of Saddam Hussein had the right to mouth-lash, brag and boast all he wanted. That, to me, was just his own way of expressing his thoughts and views. Today, we still have leaders echoing Saddam-like thoughts all over the world, but does that make them automatic enemies of the civilized world because they express opinions opposed to the powers that be, in Washington?

While the whole drama of the American government trying to convince the American people that invading Iraq was the best option, the rest of the world looked on helplessly. Even Russia, France and Germany were reduced to toothless bulldogs. Blindly, the generally, ignorant American populace cheered their President on. But one man stood tall on his principles of morality. That man was Michael Moore. In the face of aggression and intimidation, he had the courage to echo the views of many around the world concerning the insensitivities of the current government, although many called him a traitor. Reports in the news media drummed up support for the war, in most cases which further convinced the people into believing in the injustice that was about to be served on the innocent people of Iraq. Selfishly, many Americans later joined the crusade to condemn the war after they had lost a loved one or personally been disabled by it.

As at today, body counts of American casualties is about 3000 and a hundred times more from Iraqis and the death count continues. My heart weeps, because this has been a huge loss. Families in Iraq are mourning on a daily bases. Entire lineages being wiped out and God forbid a race of people. Recently, I watched a video clip on YouTube, the popular video sharing web site from an American contributor “Good Morning ware house America” titled “What for war? I don’t even like Iraq!”, it showed interviews of some Iraqs who aired their opinions on their concerns based on the planned invasion. Frankly speaking, before the invasion, the ordinary Iraqi looked like a peaceful person. Contrary to the general ideas that the Iraqis needed liberation, that was not the case. Today, after more than five years of liberating the Iraqis and not finding any weapons of mass destruction, many lives have been lost including the killings of the Saddam Husein’s sons, and the situation is not any better, instead I see confusion and no clear cut plan by the American government to get out of Iraq partially due to protecting the nations pride. For God’s sake, people are dying and I doubt if their souls would rest in peace.

Let us not forget that even the most seemingly peace animal can be dangerous if threatened. A recent case was the death of the popular crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin (R.I.P.), who died from a poisonous spear to the heart from this supposedly peaceful animal. I cannot recall as many as a suicide bomb in Iraq in a week or even in a month before the war, but today, it’s like firecrackers in a festive season. As bad as this image is for the American government, the people are not exempted because of their passiveness or outright support of this injustice. History will never forget this great destruction dealt on a sovereign nation based on flimsy accusations. Only Americans can cleanse themselves of this rot, no one else.
