Why is it important to learn correct article writing? Though you may not be quite aware of it, some persons who frequent your website to read your articles and other posts are attracted by the manner in which you express your ideas, also known as your writing style.
Yes the vast majority read your stuff because, first and foremost, they find it informative.
But suppose they could have gotten the same information elsewhere, why would they still come to you? They like the way you say what you say! We can not escape that fact.
Back in high school, remember why you understood better and faster when that particular teacher was in class? Yes, he taught in ways that made things more interesting and easier to grasp. It is about style.
To some extent, your writing style evolves naturally over a period of time. It borrows something from your personality (which itself evolves gradually), and your reading choices. But to a large extent, your writing style has a lot to do with the decisions you consciously make while writing.
Now, how can you consciously develop your writing style? For one thing, getting too concerned about style can result in mannered, stilted piece of writing. There is a need for balance, and there are certain basic rules about style that you need to keep in mind whenever you set out to write:
Avoid stereotypes and overused clichés: Though it is not easy to completely avoid stereotypes altogether, but make deliberate efforts to craft original words and sentences.
Employ metaphors and other expressions in your writing. Think twice before using a familiar phrase, unless it is obvious that the alternative expression would sound unnatural.
Use Words That Come Naturally To You: While you surely have to work at enlarging your vocabulary, developing your unique writing style will be a lot easier if you stick to words you mostly use in your everyday conversations.
Most times when people use words for the sole aim of impressing the reader or hearer, they often either misuse such words or they end up sounding awkward.
Be Precise In Your Expressions: According to the folks at Oxford, the English language has more than 250,000 words, many of them synonyms. Therefore we are presented with alternative ways of saying the same things. That is both an asset and a liability.
This huge array of alternative expressions is a blessing in that when properly utilized, it greatly polishes our writing and even verbal expressions. But it becomes a challenge because even when there are several terms we can use to express an idea, it turns out that one will always be more suitable than the others.
Meanwhile it is only when your expressions are clear, detailed, and unambiguous that your article will come to life. Strive to find just the right words for your descriptions. Do a little research, if necessary. Try and know the names of most things, and use those names. Use the right modifiers and the most accurate nouns and verbs.
Be An Avid Reader: You must be a voracious reader, and you should read broadly. Do not restrict yourself to subjects related to your business. Indeed, it has so often been said that those whose knowledge revolves only around their business interests are not really knowledgeable.
And for you, a professional writer, your repertoire of expressions will be very limited if your subjects of interest are too linear. Read everything you possible can, especially great literatures.
