Why Deploy Bes 5, Lotus Domino, Failover, Disaster Recovery, Glyphic Technologies, New York City

Iīll let you in on a little secret, the weakest link in most companies Domino Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity Plan is the Blackberry Enterprise Server. Most small and medium business have a good deal for redundancy in their Domino Environment, Mail / Application Servers are clustered, they have multiple SMTP/MTAīs, etc. Iīve run across very few environments in that last few years that would be severely impacted by a site outage or the loss of their primary data center. The Achilles heel of SMBīs DR/BC plan is BES and thatīs because implementing redundancy in BES v4.x is a fairly involved process that most companies have not undertaken.
Executives live on their Blackberries. File and print services or Internet connectivity can go down and while inconvenient it is not the end of the world. If the Blackberry stops working that is a major problem. Ask an Executive what their most important IT tool is and the most common answer you will get is the Blackberry. Blackberries are mission critical devices that can not be unavailable due to a BES failure.
It is an unwritten rule that datacenters will have problems at the most inconvenient times; the server room will flood at 5AM on Monday morning or the HVAC system will fail on the Saturday of 4th of July weekend. In these situations they ability for decision makers and key IT staff to communicate quickly and effectively is vital and the blackberry is by far the easiest way to do this provided that BES is available.
I was once working at a client that had a calling tree for DR where one person would call the first person on the list, who would call the second who would call the third, etc. While this system worked it was slow and was subject to breakdown at any link. To illustrate how much more effective blackberries would be in an emergency calling tree situation we preformed the following test. One department of 15 people had to convey a message to all members using the calling tree while another department of 20 people had to convey the same message and acknowledge that they had received the message using blackberries. The calling tree group took 2 and half hours to get the message to its 15 members, the message sent via blackberry was acknowledged by all department members in less the 15 minutes. Needless to say that was a very valuable exercise and the DR priority of BES was quickly changed to critical.
BES 5.x now supports high availability and failover, donīt you owe it to yourself to look at the vital new feature? For a free report on How to Implement BES 5.x failover in Lotus Domino go to www.glytec.com/reports. To learn more about BES 5.x or Domino Failover see www.glytec.com/failover.
