Sen. George Allen: Wrong On Iraq, Wrong For The Senate

Robert Paul Reyes
“The situation there is one that needs adjustments, that needs changes in tactics. We need to adapt to the situation on the ground.”

Sen. George Allen at a campaign event on Oct 20, 2006. referring not to his dismal senatorial campaign, but to the Iraq War.

That’s like General Custer on the banks of the Little Big Horn River, turning to his second-in-command and saying: The Cheyenne and Sioux warriors seem to have their panties in a twist, we might not get home in time for our nightly poker game.

You don’t have to be a 4-star general or a rocket scientist to know that the situation in Iraq is “SNAFU”.

The American soldiers with their billions in military hardware are caught in the middle of an insurgency and a civil war fought by fanatics with low-tech weapons.

Trying to bring democracy to the Middle East is like trying to teach pigs table manners. In retrospect we should have “shocked and awed” Iraq back to the stone age, declared victory, and immediately brought our troops home.

Allen’s opponent, James Webb, on the other hand, has been a vehement critic of the war since 2002, before the American invasion, when he wrote that it would mire the United States in a bloody and protracted quagmire and destabilize the oil-rich region.

Anyone who really believes that the disastrous situation in Iraq only needs a little tweaking, is a fool who has no business running for the Senate.

Sen. George “Macaca” Allen is wrong on Iraq and wrong for the Senate. It’s the Senate that needs a little tweaking, let’s throw out the Republican members of the culture of corruption and elect statesmen like James Webb.
