Trump and Bolton: The New UN Clean-Up Team?

Sher Zieve
All that I know of President Bush’s UN Nominee John Bolton is that he is tough and he is driving both the leftist Democrat contingent and the wimpy liberal Republican one out of their minds. That’s excellent and, most certainly good enough for my support! It’s inordinately transparent that the neo-lib and leftist Dem leadership (Kennedy, Reid, Durbin, Schumer et al) and Republican Senators John “the compromiser” McCain and “weepy” George Voinovich will oppose his nomination, vigorously. The option left to President Bush is a recess appointment. Please, Mr. President, go for it! We already know that the hard-line leftist Democrats are going to fight Judge John Roberts’ SCOTUS appointment. Let’s get Bolton installed as UN Ambassador so that we can fully concentrate on ensuring Roberts’ victory. Besides, the UN needs and requires a strong US Ambassador to keep the it in line; as it has already been hit with one criminal scandal after another. If the only way to even begin to bring the UN’s outrageous behaviors into check is a tough Bolton—so be it. Diplomatic, obliging and hand-wringing “leadership” hasn’t worked. Increasingly, it sounds as if the former Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security will fill the bill.

Then there is Donald Trump, who has tried in the past and is currently working toward helping the UN solve its financial renovation issues. Note: In the interest of full disclosure, I freely admit that Mr. Trump is one of my personal favorites and that I am totally addicted to The Apprentice.

As was to be expected, on “The Donald’s” first attempt to assist the UN several years ago, he was apparently met with a less-than-enthusiastic-response by Kofi Annan. Now, however, Trump has testified before a Senate Homeland Security subcommittee on the cost of UN renovations and advised them that he can save the UN (and ultimately the US taxpayer) approximately $2B dollars—yes that’s two-billion with a “B”. Trump has even offered his consulting services, for the project, pro-bono! Getting Trump’s services for free is an amazing gift. But, Kofi Annan still appears to be “lukewarm” to the idea. My guess is that, if Trump is involved in the project, there would be too much scrutiny of where all of the money will be allocated. This is definitely something we taxpayers want. However, in consideration of Mr. Annan’s current scandal-ridden UN, the UN Secretary General is probably not jumping up and down at the prospect of someone running the project who would pay an inordinate amount of attention to all of the funds. Hmmm. I suspect that a Trump-run organization might just know where almost every dollar has gone and to whom it has been paid. In light of recent UN history, I doubt Kofi and his nation-collective will be pleased. That, of course, is precisely why Trump would be an invaluable asset.

One thing that remains crystal clear is that both Bolton and Trump have been street-fighters when it’s been necessary. They each have the reputation of being tough—very tough—when it’s necessary. That’s something we need today in business, politics and yes—even diplomats. Without tough-mindedness and actions, we the people will continue to be gouged by the UN forever; with said gouging increasing geometrically. Why? Because, thus far, the UN’s leadership has been allowed to get away with it. A UN clean-up is long overdue. And Bolton and Trump are two of the guys with the mops.
