Mexican American Bar Association Endorses Winograd for Congress
Marina del Rey - The Mexican American Bar Association (MABA), one of the largest Latino bar associations in America, endorses Marcy Winograd for Congress in her challenge to corporate Democrat Jane Harman in southern California´s 36th district.
MABA President Judy Perez praised Winograd for her commitment to protecting the rights of the Latino community. "MABA's mission statement plays a key role in deciding which candidate we endorse for office. After having personally met Ms. Winograd and studied her impressive track record, it is clear that MABA's mission is exemplified in much of her work. We believe that her genuine concern for all sectors of the community, along with her professional accomplishments, make her the best candidate for the 36th Congressional District."
Says Winograd, "I am thrilled to have the endorsement of such a prominent organization representing attorneys, judges, elected officials, law school students and business people of diverse ethnic backgrounds. With MABA´s support, I will advocate for increased higher educational opportunities and diversity in the legal community. In addition, I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform, one of MABA´s priorities."
Winograd´s opponent Jane Harman recently received an "underperforming" score on immigration reform by the National Latino Congreso, which cited Harman´s troubling support for expanding immigration enforcement into the social services.
In contrast, Winograd´s immigration platform calls for a path to earned citizenship, an end to detention quotas, and passage of the Dream Act, federal legislation granting citizenship to immigrants who graduate college.
Winograd, a former volunteer organizer with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union, looks forward to working with MABA and other Latino organizations to mobilize support for immigration and education reform. To that end, she has recruited former Marine and now anti-war leader Rick Reyes to works as Latino Outreach Director on the Winograd for Congress campaign. In the 36th congressional district, which includes Lennox and the harbor, Latinos comprise an estimated 19% of the voting population.
