LOS ANGELES - On Thursday, a local non-profit, Motivating Our Students Through Experience (MOSTE), raised over $60,000 to help local Los Angeles students achieve their dreams of going to college.

MOSTE held two events to raise money for the organization, which works directly with LA´s most underserved students by providing one-on-one mentoring and educational assistance.

The 10th Annual Lanterns Luncheon was held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel and honored humanitarian and international peace-maker Greg Mortenson. Mortenson co-authored the New York Times Best Seller, Three Cups of Tea and the new book Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the co-founder of the Central Asia Institute which works to build schools and educate girls in volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson spoke about the importance of educating girls and the impact female empowerment has on a community. Over 350 people attended the event which featured speeches by current and past MOSTE participants, as well as a surprise presentation to Mortenson of $3,000 the More MOSTE girls had raised for his Pennies for Peace program.

The "Evening with Greg Mortenson" was held at the L.A. Live Grammy Museum, on the Target Terrace. Attendees enjoyed the beautiful spring weather while learning about the great work MOSTE does for local LA communities. Mortenson signed books and spoke about his life, his mission and his ongoing struggle to educate women half way around the world. During a presentation in the Grammy Museum Auditorium, Mortenson stressed the importance of promoting education and peace, not only in impoverished countries, but also in our local communities.

Past graduates of the MOSTE program spoke about their personal struggles in reaching college and the role MOSTE played in helping them to overcome financial and emotional hurdles on their path to reach higher education.

Individual contributions and donations to the events resulted in MOSTE raising over $60,000. This money will be used to directly fund workshops, college tours, and mentorship programs to help LA´s underserved student population.
